"The Musings of Miles" from 1955 is an often overlooked album in the vast catalog of the great trumpeter Miles Davis. In fact, I was unaware that it even existed until its recent reissue as part of the ongoing Van Gelder remastered series. Despite it not being better known, "Musings" is a classic Miles Davis album and even more importantly, an historical one for within a few months after its recording, he would assemble what would come to be known as his First Great Quintet with John Coltrane, Red Garland, Paul Chambers and Philly Joe Jones.
Garland and Jones are already in place on this album with bass duties being handled by the legendary Oscar Pettiford. Davis's trumpet is the sole horn to be heard here but the stylings of what was ... Read More:

This is as good as music gets. The first CD is an introductory one, with some dated material, but once you get beyond the 40's, every song is a winner. This contains several Greatest Hits sets all in one place. Just brilliant stuff, to which I'd give my highest recommendation.
Release Date November 22, 1989
The CD is exactly as I expected. I had listened to some tunes from one like it that a friend has. Service, shipping, etc, was fine.

Ever since I saw this box on the shelf in 1995, I wanted to hear it.
I had one of the single discs made from these sessions, and never went back it for repeated listening. So, this box was never a must-have for me, whereas many recordings by Coltrane, Stitt, Parker, D. Gordon, Sonny Rollins were must-haves. Many years later, I see this box for a great price and buy it.
I have listened to it. I'll probably keep it, but probably won't listen much again.
I don't hear any 'magic nights' or incredible jazz. I could be over-influenced by my knowledge of circumstances that I read in the liner notes, like -- this was a pick up group, not a group used to playing together. (A pick up group of name players, but still a pick up group). ... Read More:

When Miles Davis formed his classic 1st Quintet, he negotiated a record deal with Columbia records. Before he could release anything through Columbia, however, he had to fulfill recording obligations for the indie label Prestige. In two marathon sessions (May and October '56), the Quintet recorded enough material for four albums: Cookin', Relaxin', Workin' and Steamin'. Cookin' was the first to be released and despite its brief running time (33 minutes), features the strongest material and the best song selection. The two bop tunes, two blues and one ballad provide a balance that isn't really present on the other three albums. "My Funny Valentine" is a quintessential Davis ballad performance, with the mute trumpet and gently swinging rhythm section. "Airegin" ... Read More:

Vince Guaraldi cranks out music like few others. What makes him special? Aside from his trademark "crushed tone thirds," he delivers at multiple levels. I can be swept away by the joy, bouncing with the beat, or running to my piano room to practice when I hear this CD. There are no lulls. Guaraldi's playing, masterful as it is, is all about the listener's experience, not about the player's chops. If you've enjoyed hearing him you-know-where, but want to experience him without thinking of you-know-what, he brings the same kind of positive energy to this CD as he did to the characters of you-know-who.

I had never heard of Jutta Hipp prior to purchasing this album but I am glad to have given this album a try. She provides a great supportive role on piano to Zoot's blowing - substantial but never intrusive, yet this album really belongs to Mr. Sims.
And what a great team they make on this collaboration, along with Jerry LLoyd on trumpet, Ahmed Malik on bass and Ed Thigpen on the skins! The covers are mostly standards, which are interpreted through straight ahead bop playing that lovers of this music will truly appreciate. If you like straight ahead, bop jazz, this one is a must have!!!
The headlined artist has made her statement with this recording and should be remembered as not a jazz "star" but as one who understood the music, making ... Read More:

Time Out everybody knows. The other four are as good, and in some cuts, better (Once you hear Unsquare Dance you'll never get it completely out of your ears.) Indispensable for the real Brubeck fan.
