Allison Moorer has a wonderfully smoky singing voice, the kind that can make for both great sultry jazz interpretation as well as portray the kind of heartbreak that a good country slow song requires. So an album in which she uses that voice to cover both classic jazz and country standards seems like it couldn't miss. Unfortunately, the arrangements on these covers go out of their way to vary Moorer's interpretation from the original without providing that something extra that makes a good cover. Best case in point is what Moorer does with the Johnny Cash standard, "Ring of Fire." It's a hard song to cover to begin with, as Cash's version is pretty well imprinted on the memory of anyone who's heard it, and most of us have heard it hundreds ... Read More:

Ok for a best of collection, but I have enjoyed other of this group's cd more and would put this one toward the middle for purchase
Release Date March 02, 1993
Nanci Griffith has a beautiful voice and uses it on this album to sing some of the most beautiful songs written by contemporary folk artists. This CD has been one of the most heavily played in my house for the last decade and I never tire of it - in fact I am currently writing a novel and the only CD I listen to while writing it is this one. That is the scope of its breadth and power, of its shimmering and relentless beauty.
It's a captivating work of collaboration that fills the spirit with the sort of haunting loneliness that feels good. Infinitely listenable.

I have loved John Prine ever since his first album, and Mac Wiseman has built a much-loved legacy, but "quirky" is a generous descriptor for this effort. Maybe they shoulda hung out around a backyard grill a few days before they recorded. Maybe they did, I don't know. As one earlier reviewer said, I really wanted to love this, but I felt as if I was just working too hard at it. The choice of songs from a pair of guys with their repertoires can always be second-guessed, but that isn't my criticism either. These are great songs. There just doesn't seem to be the energy I had hoped for. There's just too much Carol Lee and not enough juice. Maybe they weren't making the set I wanted them to, but it got over-produced into a time capsule insert, or something. ... Read More:

I came across this by accident while searching for another band. Twenty nine tracks, and at least 27 are brilliant. Everyone in my family loves this album. What a lineup of stars! (and NO kid rock, no rappers!) Tastefully Done!
Release Date October 25, 1990
Who could guess that a greatest hits album as good as this one would be way, way to early in a career. This great album was one I had in 1976 on vinyl, and along with most teen-age boys of the time I had a major crush on the lovely Linda. Recently, I saw it on CD and snatched it up.
In any case, this is a great collection of Ms. Ronstadt's Country and Country-Rock era; the cover of "Silver Threads" is probably my all time favorite country song, and "Love has no pride" is one of the most heart wrenching ballads ever recorded. Amazingly, even though these remain some of my all time favorites, Ronstadt just got better and better as a vocalist for three more decades.
So here's the deal, this is a best of the early career of one of the finest female ... Read More:

Pink Moon was dark as they come, but Five Leaves Left, despite others saying it is the most depressing of the three, or some other stuff, it's like an autumn morning. Or a dark night on the river. It's also longer, and features more than just the guitar. Nothing is as naked as Pink Moon, but Five Leaves Left is beautiful, and, if you have the ears, becomes apparent with the first seven seconds of The Thoughts of Mary Jane (though to me it seems about drugs).
Five Leaves Left takes me on a journey to the rivers, forests, star-filled sky, and sunsets (sometimes with a girl on my side, sometimes not). Drake's lyrics, as always, are filled with lyrics of hope , depression, life. Sometime, I really need to take a music based journey to the places that conjure ... Read More:
