I love Linda Thompson, Teddy's mother and I love Teddy's parents Richard and Linda Thompson together (sadly, they're divorced and no longer perform together). After hearing Teddy on the Brokeback Mountain soundtrack, I fell in love with his voice as well. In his new CD, a collection mostly of cover songs by such Nashville (and Bakersfield) legends as George Jones, Ernest Tubb, Dolly Parton, and Merle Haggard Teddy Thompson excels. He has the perfect voice for these country classics. Who knew something like this would come from a singer from the UK? Last year another favorite of mine, the great Van Morrison did a CD of country classics and although very good, I think Teddy has eclipsed him. Yes folks, this is indeed a pivotal work by perhaps the greatest songwriter of the post war "baby-boomer" generation. Here is where the cute folky Bobby Dylan, who sang of cannon balls firing and hard rain's fallin' came to extol the virtues of being "oh so much older then" and being "younger than that now". Just listen to the older more world weary 23 year old Bob Dylan singing about La Dolce Vita and a "Motocycle Nightmare" tale. "No No No It Ain't Me Babe"....But who exactly is this troubador spinning yarns about a "Spanish Harlem Incidents" and gazing upon the "Chimes of Freedom" flashing.

Teddy Thompsons captures the roots feel of sixties folk country
The first four tracks are excellent especially "I wish It Was Over"
The secret to record sales is airplay and that song was featured on TV as part of a summer concert. The last eight tracks are a little sombre and melancholic, but four out of twelve is better than most albums. This young man has future as a singer songwriter.

I recently saw Arlo Guthrie in concert and when he did Alice's Restaurant, I came away slightly disappointed and determined to find the original. This one is it! Arlo himself even rushes through the song he's been stuck singing all these years. My ears remember the pauses and things that made this such a delight to begin with! The ONLY ONE to own!

I've posted comments elsewhere on this series of reviews. It seems the defenders of Ms. King's cd are a little defensive, as are the ones who didn't care for her music. I have to admit, I was excited by the idea that a new acoustic monster had put a cd out. I listened to the samples in the store, and was "wow'ed" by her varied and aggressive style of guitar playing. The employee had pointed her cd out to me, and he too, made reference to M. Hedges guitar style. Like a herd of lemmings, I walked out of the store with the cd in hand, looking forward to listening through it.

I got home and (I have to say) tried to listen straight through, but was put off by the lack of a feeling that K. King's music was thought through--even as I made an effort to follow some kind ... Read More:
