This is a wonderful portfolio of what Mark Knofler can do musically. No two songs are alike and the music covers everthing from ballad to blues. Definitely worth the price of purchase.

Bob Dylan is a man who jumps in feet first without looking back and that's just what he did with this record. Up till now, he'd been a reader of the Bible, drawing references from it for his songs, but someone tossed a silver cross onto the stage when he was playing in Montreal, he picked it up, kept it and later in Arizona he experienced something, who knows what, it was personal, but it made him believe and this record is the result.
This record, like Blood on the Tracks, is a deeply personal record. During the "Blood" sessions Dylan was going through the pain of separation, during the "Slow Train Sessions" he's a man more sure of himself, secure in his belief. But if you've followed Bob Dylan at all, then you know he's always ... Read More:

I suppose after the success of John Wesley Harding Bob Dylan thought going back to Nashville and recording another album was a good idea. I'm wondering if all these years later, if he still feels that way. I know the album was a commercial success, that "Lay Lady Lay" was a top ten hit as a forty-five, but, for me at least, there is something missing here. This is a happy record, recorded by a happy man. At least that's they way it seems to me and that's not the way I like to think of Dylan best. I see him as, if not a leader of his generation, a poet at least. I love the dark lyrics of his earlier work. Love the work that comes after "Nashville Skyline," well not all of it, but most of it.
The recording of "Girl from the North Country" ... Read More:

I first heard the song "The Last of the Hobo Kings" on a college radio station in my car. As soon as I got home, I looked it up and bought this CD.
The song carries you through the kind of story everyone wants to be a part of. Other songs on this CD tell stories too. Theres a song that makes you really think about New Orleans, it's surrounding areas, and Hurricane Katrina. Mary Gauthier is from Baton Rouge, and you can hear the emotion in this song. It's very easy to relate to the songs on this CD, I think it's great.

In 1971, (i was 12) I asked my mom and dad if I could stay up and watch this cartoon on the ABC movie of the week. They read about in their TV Guide and agreed quickly.
Listening to Dustin Hoffman narrate this story of a round headed boy named Obllo living in the land of Point, I was amazed. This little cartoon had a great story and wonderful music which captured my attention.
For weeks after I saw this TV movie, I hummed and sung most of the score. I assumed my mom, dad and younger brother were sick of hearing my voice singing "Me and My Arrow". So a few weeks after I saw the movie, I got an LP of this film (The same one as this CD). Under Harry Nilsson's narration, the soundtrack was just as wonderful as the TV movie was.

I'm a country girl, and have grown up with Bluegrass, but I'm not crazy about much of the genre's artists. But these kids are amazing. The virtuosic playing between vocal tracks is thrilling and makes you want to get up and dance around the room! And then the vocal tracks bring something brand new. It's not bluegrass, it's not even country. It's just good contemporary harmonies, great songwriting, and something the listener can relate to.
If you like country, get this album. If you like bluegrass, DEFINITELY get this album. If you like folk, get this album. If you like acoustic rock, get this album. If you like new, refreshing music, get this album.

I have to say I'm really surprised that nobody else has complained about this but I felt the camera cuts were OBNOXIOUSLY frequent to the point that I honestly can't watch the dvd. It sounds ridiculous but I actually recorded the audio into my computer so I can just listen to the concert. The camera cuts to a different performer an average of once every bar through the entire concert and it is common as the intensity picks up for the camera to cut as frequently as every beat. We have to be talking thousands of cuts over the length of the performance. Do we need this? I think the average jazz fan has a longer attention span than most; why do producers always feel the need to "inject" excitement into live music dvd's when the good performers (like these guys) can do ... John Prine has created some of the most masterful songs that look at the dark side of humanity. Drug addiction, senior grief and other afflictions are compelling sung. There are some themes of hope, as people have courage while in difficulty and a couple of fun songs like "Illegal Smile". Don't look for happy hootenanny music, this guy had the heavy metal lyrics a lifetime before that music came along. The Greek playwrights treasured tragedy for it's catharsis, Prine's music offers the same thing. Cry a little and then feel good. You're a lot better off than many of his characters.

Hemingway once said, "...a writer needs to go out, beyond where anyone can reach him..." (Nobel prize acceptance speech) Meaning, take some chances to make art that is important and original. Mason has done that here.
If a casual fan of MJ, this one is safe to buy. If new to him, buy it, then go back to Use Your Voice and his self-titled debut. Diehards will be delighted with, In the Ever. It has the staple sing-alongs, but then ventures off into new territory; not as clean as Boneclouds which is a good thing. It's Use your Voice with more life under its belt.
