Berry Gordy, Jr. and Motown were incredibly busy in the sixties. The enormous task of spinning so many plates at one time would be impossible today. From recruiting talent (singers, songwriters, musicians) to recording to all the legal paperwork involved in running a not-so-small business must have weighed heavy. Despite all of this, 1967 was another banner year for recorded output at Motown.

Besides the hits (Jimmy Mack, I Was Made To Love Her, Bernadette, Ain't No Mountain High Enough, I Wish It Would Rain) there are surprising number of non-hits here. After the first flawless Motown box set finished up with 1971, it was inevitable that there was going to be a drop in quality on the second volume. When Stevie Wonder's contribution to disc two is the masterful "Sir Duke" and just one disc later we're hit with the wretched-without-bounds "I Just Called to Say I Love You," it's virtually impossible to wonder where it all went wrong. Closing out the set with the hilariously mawkish "End of the Road" by Boyz II Men is the sadly appropriate death knell for a once proud label that lost its way. It's hard to connect most of this music to the label that once released 'Innervisions' or 'What's Going On' or 'Cloud Nine'.

The CD features well known and unknown neo soul artists. It's refreshing hearing music that goes beyond the "regular" music heard on typical radio stations. I started listening to neo soul via internet a couple of years ago and have been hooked ever since! Try 'em all!

A pretty impressive album and the use of the word "Diva" is aptly used here with maybe the exception of Toni Braxton (who is a great singer) but has she had the longevity to justify a Diva title? of course an Ultimate Divas II might address the omission of Celine Dion,Cher and as a personal note i would like to have seen Nina Simone's "My baby dont care" as a footnote Artetha Franklyn performing "Nessun Dorma" was/is incredible and a nice ending treat.

If you like the Disco Heaven compilations from Hed Kandi then you are bound to love this. Up-front house with soul & gospel drenched vocals throughout. And the kicker is the price. This has got to be the cheapest way to get 2 discs full of great house music.
