44 tracks for $10 is an incredible value. Besides classics from Matador mainstays like Pavement, Yo La Tengo and Guided By Voices, this 2 CD set also contains great tracks by lesser known bands like Helium, Railroad Jerk and Thinking Fellers Union Local 282. The liner notes are also fun. Consider buying a used copy for a couple bucks and loading it onto your MP3 player.

For this second "Grave," they build on the success of the first one by keeping the same crazy-[low] price and switching the lineup. Some tracks, like The Cruxshadows' "Marilyn, My Bitterness V2.0" straddle goth, techno and 80s new wave all at once.
The Moors' slavic chant "Dve Nevesti" is ominously catchy. Mors Syphilitica's opera-goth ("Ungrateful Girl") is as amazing as ever. Necromantik Sunshine's "Necromantic Sunshine" (hmmm, their first song?) has a seedy, dancefloor Christian Death appeal. The next few songs are more forgettable, more electronic. Uva Ursi does Gitane Demone & Eva O proud with the strange "Waltz of Maldoror." Doppelganger's "Mad Sky" sounds like a grrrl band doing the soundtrack for the 70s cartoon "The ... Read More:

So I'll make it brief. This is a hidden gem of the late 90's, and it contains the Holy Grail: Dead Man Walking. David Bowies acoustic version of a techno experiment is quite possibly the most chillingly beautiful song ever written by the Glam God of Rock and Roll. In addition "Do Ya" is awesome as is Edwyn Collin's "Girl Like You". Mostly every track is enjoyable.

This CD features a few decent songs, but they are not something you can't live without. Radiohead's "Lucky" is the only true standout (I bought this CD just for that track), but now that it's also available on "Ok Computer", there is no real reason to buy this CD. In hindsight, I probably should have bought the single version of this CD since it also has a really cool instrumental track by Portishead not featured here.

If you are a fan of real punk rock, and classic Oi, you will love this album. Every song is a punk anthem, absolute must have.
Release Date January 19, 1993
This is an excellent compilation. Tracks from the usual suspects like Wire, Sex Pistols, Buzzcocks, and X-Ray Spex are supplemented by excellent tracks I had not heard by the likes of The Adverts and The Saints, plus others.
The energy, freshness, and vitality of the music really comes through this mix.
I wish they could have included The Clash in this compilation... it seems like they very much belonged but could not be included for legal reasons.
I had preferred the work of New York punksters from the same era, i.e. Talking Heads, Television, Richard Hell and the Voidoids, etc. But this compilation has turned me on to some other bands from the U.K.; I just might end up liking the British Punk better.

I love Hopeless Records. Some of my favorite bands like Mustard Plug, Avenged Sevenfold, and The Weakerthans are featured on this label and appear multiple time on this album. The Hopelessly Devoted To You compilations are some of the best out there, especially since in my opinion the Punk-O-Rama series has gotten too dull.
Volume Four has been my favorite of this set. This album introduced me to Avenged Sevenfold. Second Heartbeat got me hooked on the band. Common Rider's Small Pebble is a unique little ditty that made tap my toes. My favorite ska band of all time, Mustard Plug, has two great offerings on this record with Not Enough and Already Gone. the Weakerthans have Aside and an accoustic number called Pat Due, both cool tracks. Digger is represented ... Read More:

Every track in this collection does justice to the great Kill Rock Stars label. Outstanding are the cuts by Tiger Trap, Slant 6, Mary Lou Lord (! ), and the uproriously funny CWA ('Only Straight Girls Wear Dresses').

Shame on those listeners who have chosen to criticize Trojan for the release of these comprehensive, low-priced, collections of chestnuts.
As another listener pointed out, the sound quality is about what is to be expected given the nature and level of the technology at the time these recordings were originally made. Yes, they're at times a bit primitive, but that's the nature of the beast.
If you want Steely Dan, go find it elsewhere.
Not strictly for purists, the entire series is a fantastic introduction for the neophyte, as well as a tremendous resource for the long-standing aficionados among us.
A better bargain cannot be found. Kudos to Trojan.
If you're getting only three of these to start, I'd recommend "Rocksteady" ... Read More:
