Well, I actually owned this CD in 1994 (or there abouts). As others have said, at the time it was about "Grunge". Funny to even think about now. 3 children and 2 ex-husbands later, I misplaced the CD. I only recently tried to find it on Amazon. I was thrilled to see that I could get it again. These are the sounds of my youth by many of the bands of my generation. Not all are great songs, but all are like a time capsule. b sides, obscure songs, whatever...It's fun.
Release Date October 10, 1995
I love the originals, and some of the groups doing the covers, but this has to be one of the worst messes I've ever heard.
The covers are lifeless and dull, and even The Flaming Lips, who I thought could do no wrong, do a horrible cover.

I have no idea what techno CD these people are reviewing, but it is definately not this one. Almost every song on this compilation is standard fare on most other compilations. If you listen to Nazarene, Walking on your Hands, Pagan Love Song, Ignore the Machine, Snake Dance, Thalia, Witches, or Spiritual Cramp and you think they are techno, then you've got something wrong with your head. There are several songs with a 'techno' flavour, absolutely, but they are still quite goth. What makes the genre so great is that it's not brutally standardized, like many others are. There is great diversity in goth music, and this covers most of that diversity, though not quite all, unfortunately.

We all know SOIA is one of the best and most influential HC/Punk bands of modern times. Why bother with a tribute? Most of the bands butcher the songs and this is a poor intorduction to the band for anyone new to the band's material. I don't see the point w/ tribute CDs... only a few ever have been even 1/2 decent... like the 1st NATIVITY IN BLACK SABBATH TRIBUTE, that was great because you got to hear modern versions of those songs. The kind of music SOIA was playing back then is still relevant today, there is no real room to improve on any of their original songs/ideas because that genre of music really has had nowhere to go but down since. Some of the bands gave it the college try.. but most fail. Buy every SOIA album up to and including BUILT TO LAST and you'll ... Read More:

Nope, in fact it was one of the songs that I hated the first time I heard it and can still gather up a load of revulsion for today. The oddball tune that drags this collection up to the .500 line is Pete Shelley's "Homo Sapien". Funny, catchy and just plain clever, but I worry about Pete. Other than that volume 5 barely trips the meter. Welcome to the middle of the new wave road.
Release Date October 18, 1994
One of the best compilations across the whole Just Can't Get Enough New Wave Hits collection, filled up with tremendous hit singles and timeless memories from the 80's. Q-Feel's Dancing In Heaven (Orbital Be-Bop) is, for me, simply the song that could probably define the sound of the entire decade.
Shame Rhino has cut the length of the songs, not only on this volume but throughout the entire series, as they did also with the Billboard Hits collection before...
This is, however, a must for anybody who's grown up listening and enjoying the lifting music of the 80's, and a highly recommended for any New Wave neophyte.

As a person who spent their formative years through the eighties, I collect music from that era. To those who didn't live it, it would be less geeky to collect stamps or wheat pennies. But I tell you, the confections found on this series is purely delightful. It is the songs many of us grew up with. We cranked up the radio in our big, gas guzzling cars and cruised the strip to this music. Sure, the "preps" were listening to Michael Jackson and Madonna, while the "burn-outs" were listening to AC/DC and still going off in shop class about Van Halen using keyboards in their music. But those of us somewhere in between listened to THIS. We knew The Cure and REM were musical geniuses. Of course, we also thought the same about Kajagoogoo and Bow Wow Wow, but ... Read More:
