Take Action!, Vol. 3

Release Date September 09, 2003
A sleeper that demonstrates what happens when you take a bunch of out-of-the-mainstream bands and give them a good cause. In this case the cause is to support the suicide helpline, and the bands provide some of their best. Thrice's "Silhouette" sounds almost as good as Killswitch Engage's "End of Heartache" (although without Howard Jones' vox potenta), Shadows Fall unleashes a live version of its simultaneously psychotic and pensive "Thoughts Without Words." Contributions by Poison the Well, Silverstein, and Further Seems Forever add to the mayhem. Consider it aggressor ownership of the auditory senses.

Is it strange to have an assortment of thrash, speed, and core performing for suicide prevention charity? It should be noted ... Read More:

CD-Charts Music : Where the Pyramid Meets the Eye - Tribute to Roky Erickson

Where the Pyramid Meets the Eye - Tribute to Roky Erickson

CD-Charts > Music > Compilations
by: Various Artists

Release Date October 19, 1990
Roky Erickson is one of those artists that are few in number. Roky is a genius there is just no other way to put it.

When you listen to this album the evidence of that genius is that each song sounds like it was written by or for the artist covering it. That songs can be that malleable have that much space to them that you would think that Julian Cope or the Judybats were playing their own music is testament to how timeless true art is. You hear that same beauty when listening to Roky just playing guitar and singing by himself on one of his own albums. True quality is always evident no matter what the wrappings.

Though Roky has had troubled times his brother stepped up and took things over in order to protect Roky's ... Read More:

Burning London: The Clash Tribute

by: Various Artists

Release Date May 04, 1999
when the exec's were sitting around discussing who should sing the songs on this cd there was someone in that group that stood up and said " let's get the Indigo Girls to sing Clampdown". You have got to be kidding me. This CD is a total waste of money and time. The other covers are lame as well. Some things you just leave alone. The Beatles, Jimi, Dylan etc. The Clash is one of those groups that there is no band that can or should cover them. I am actualy suprised that the record exec's didn't get Barry Manilow to sing Death or Glory. Wow, Joe must be spinning in his grave on this one. They didn't have a zero so I gave it a 1 star.

Trojan Box Set: Ska

Release Date July 09, 2002
Shame on those listeners who have chosen to criticize Trojan for the release of these comprehensive, low-priced, collections of chestnuts.

As another listener pointed out, the sound quality is about what is to be expected given the nature and level of the technology at the time these recordings were originally made. Yes, they're at times a bit primitive, but that's the nature of the beast.

If you want Steely Dan, go find it elsewhere.

Not strictly for purists, the entire series is a fantastic introduction for the neophyte, as well as a tremendous resource for the long-standing aficionados among us.

A better bargain cannot be found. Kudos to Trojan.

If you're getting only three of these to start, ... Read More:

Just Can't Get Enough: New Wave Hits Of The '80s, Vol. 15

from: Rhino

Release Date June 20, 1995
I own several CDs in this series and this one, unfortunately is the one that comes off the shelf the least. Even since loading the contents up MP3 style into my computer and iPod only a few get played. Only a select few truly sound like the alternative radio I grew up with in the 80s.

Blackest Album: An Industrial Tribute to Metallica

by: Various Artists

Release Date August 04, 1998
I am a Metallica fan and was first curious of this kind of tribute. I have other tribute albums from different artists. There are a few good ones and a couple of misses for me on this cd but it's good enough for me to still listen & enjoy it.
But if you are too wary, try to find it at used cd stores so you won't feel so bad if you end up not liking it.

Whore: Tribute to Wire

CD-Charts > Music > Compilations
by: Various Artists

Release Date April 27, 1999
This is a phenomenal tribute album to the seminal post-punk British band Wire. From the gorgeous images that adorn the album pages (which remind me of some of the work of Vaughan Oliver and V23 for 4AD records) to the very high-caliber music included, tribute albums do not get any better than this. Certainly there are arguably a few tracks that might not be to your liking, but pretty much every band/musician involved seemed highly inspired, and wanted to contribute some quality music.

From the more well known acts (Lush, My Bloody Valentine, Lee Ranaldo of Sonic Youth, Mike Watt from the Minutemen, and Laika) to the truly obscure (Scanner, The Ex-Lion Tamers, Polar Bear, and Main), this album covers the spectrum of musical styles. Sure, all are ... Read More:

The Duran Duran Tribute Album

CD-Charts > Music > Compilations
by: Various Artists

Release Date May 10, 2005
It's actually pretty simple. The songs speak for themselves. Anyone who won't admit Duran Duran being one of the greatest pop bands ever and recognizing Simon's talent for melody writing has to reconsider the overall parameters with which one judges. Even the bands that conceptualised this tribute album, which they did for an exact reason, didn't come close to style and beauty with their own songs compared to DD.
