But if I could change some minor things, I would have gotten a better version of The Charles Atlas Song, which is just barely worth listening to. Although everything else is pure gold. And my current faves on this album are Time Warp (Groove Ghoulies), Touch-a Touch-a Touch Me (The Chubbies), and Planet, Schmanet Janet (Tsunami Bomb), and all the floor show songs.

I collect instrumental surf CDs and have a very broad context within which to place the songs on this disk. The two songs by the Coffin Daggers are expressive, energetic, ironically humorous, beautifully played, and lovely sounding. They are thick with gorgeous guitar distortion. The rest of the songs are not in the same league, and sound like simplistic garage rock. It makes more sense to get a Coffin Daggers CD. Even the Volcanos (whose own two CDs are sparkling and exciting) sound boring here in a rip-off of the old standard "Church Key" they call "Bad News." I have listened to this CD several dozen times and the bad vibes have grown strong. Several collections that are much better and I still enjoy after many many hearings are "Bikini World," ... OMG! Very nice combination of artists. Soul Asylum, Pearl Jam,...!!! When I was listening this album I could almost feel that mug and trees atmospheer from Louisiana!! I love that album.
Release Date October 10, 1995
I love the originals, and some of the groups doing the covers, but this has to be one of the worst messes I've ever heard.
The covers are lifeless and dull, and even The Flaming Lips, who I thought could do no wrong, do a horrible cover.
Release Date May 15, 2001
This is a OK comp of older Goth bands, ... but its a good comp to own if your curious about some of the older bands.
As a DJ I find the following tracks useful: Bauhaus - Dark Entries Southern Death Cult - Moya (you might know them as the Cult) Gene Loves Jezebel - Shaving My Neck Tones On Tail - Burning Skies Sex Gang Children - Dieche (one of the better songs on here) Christian Death - This Is Heresy

Shame on those listeners who have chosen to criticize Trojan for the release of these comprehensive, low-priced, collections of chestnuts.
As another listener pointed out, the sound quality is about what is to be expected given the nature and level of the technology at the time these recordings were originally made. Yes, they're at times a bit primitive, but that's the nature of the beast.
If you want Steely Dan, go find it elsewhere.
Not strictly for purists, the entire series is a fantastic introduction for the neophyte, as well as a tremendous resource for the long-standing aficionados among us.
A better bargain cannot be found. Kudos to Trojan.
If you're getting only three of these to start, I'd recommend "Rocksteady" ... Read More:

With Volume 4 of the Just Can't Get Enough series Rhino really got their act together. Leading off with Devo's greatest non-hit ever "Freedom Of Choice", this disc rarely lets up and only occasionally stumbles. The Boomtown Rats "Up All Night", doomed Phil Seymour's "Precious To Me", and the Translators "Everywhere That I'm Not" all make for legitimate reasons to buy this disc, but the two killers are The Members early MTV staple "Working Girl" and The Monroes "What Do All The People Know". Try finding THOSE somewhere else. One other great song that could have been a huge plus to this collection was The Kings "Switchin' To Glide/This Beat Goes On" but THEY CUT HALF OF IT OFF!!! Whose idea was that? No matter. ... Read More:

This is a great compilation that introduced me to alot of "new" bands.I bought this being a fan of bands like Hole, the Lunachicks, the Muffs, Buck, etc...BTW, the song "Retard Girl" by Hole...Courtney Love wrote it about herself, she's the retard girl! Yes, she grew up poor white trash..and was taunted and made fun of.Go figure.Any fan of indie rock of the female persuasion should love this! Great stuff by April March, Third Grade Teacher, etc and "Dishy" is a great song.*rock on with yr frock on*

I used to listen to this while living in San Fran's Mission District with a houseful of bohemians. Most of us were supported by that city's municipal welfare program (General Assistance, or "G.A."). We did various things to have fun and feel better about ourselves, and this album was one of my favorite things. Someone had brought it home from her used-record store job... I think her name was Holly.
It's only just now, searching for it during this nostalgic evening of clicking-around, that it occurs to me why this compilation is so powerful. It's an album about addiction. This is perhaps most clear from the final track. Search for the lyrics to Wilcox's song. It's a powerful testament to the hope and sadness of recovery. The boat imagery there is wonderful. Take also the ... Read More:
