Pop this fine punky anthology into your car's CD player the next time you need an adrenaline surge during a late-night drive. You'll make it to Duluth and beyond just fine. Iggy Pop's "Lust For Life," the B-52's "Private Idaho," and the Trashmen's "Surfin' Bird" are alone worth the price of admission. I can't hear Billy Idol sing "Dancing With Myself" without wishing it was 1984 and I was on my way downtown to dance the night away with a purple-haired cutie. There are a couple of songs I wouldn't have picked. That's small potatoes.

I'm surprised there aren't more reviews and that (as of this writing) one could procure a used copy for $1.50.

First and Last and Forever: A Tribute to the Sisters of Mercy

I tend to avoid tribute albums, as they're inherently lousy product. Love of the Sisters and thirst for anything else drove me to buy this; at least it was used.

There are probably two or three decent tracks on here. The problem, of course, is most of the covers do nothing at all. For the most part, the bands here fail to interpret the songs in a new, different way that might actually promote further appreciation of the Sisters.

The opener, Black Planet, is one of the highlights. Aside from having one of the best names ever, Automatic Head Detonator (who, it appears, only ever released this cover!) do a decent job of changing the song up, giving it an industrial feel and not offending. I suspect that most people are going to discover this album, like I did, trying to complete collections of songs by their favorite artists. I was a Cracker and Sparklehorse fan which led me to this album. Now arguably I am a much bigger Vic Chesnutt fan than I am of either of those bands. In fact the Cracker and Sparklehorse covers on this album aren't all that great. I give this album 4 stars because the songs are all VC classics and should be heard by those unfamiliar with his work, but inevitably the covers are of hit-and-miss quality. On the weak side are the Hootie cover of "Gravity of the Situation", and the Smashing Pumpkins cover of "Sad Peter Pan", which really pale to the original upon repeated listening to both. ... Well I bought what I though was this CD in 1998. But what the CD shop imported for me was Gothic Rock vol.2 . For some reason, the one has almoust all the song the other one has. But I wanted the CD for Midnight Configuration - No Limit. Now after 6 years 'n found the one I was looking for in the firs place. Love the older Gothic songs. I'm still waiting for my order...

This is the best Skarmageddon of the whole series,though there is always a special place in my heart for the first one,after all it introduced me to other forms of ska than Ska-core,that I had only previously known through the Mighty Mighty Bosstones.(And Fishbone).
The best song is on disc two, Sgt. Scagnetti's "Sideshow" it is almost like what Fatboy Slim would do if he did Ska,at least in my humble opinion. It bears repeat listening. Some of the bands have albums out on Asian Man Records and whatnot,check 'em out.

Look over the list of artists on the CD, the ones you recognize - go out and buy all their CD's. While STIFF was great in the late 1970's as the conveyor of UK/Euro indie music - most of the best artists moved on - what's left is an interesting time capsule of that the last 70's and very early 80's. There is reason Humphrey Ocean & the Hardy Annuals or Mick Farren are forgotten. At the time, they were loud and brash and a nice antidote to the soft rock era of the 1970's but from that emerged Costello, Nick Lowe, and hundreds of artists you can name & remember ... and of course, leaving most of these guys & women behind ... so if you're a completist collector, you'll want these tracks but for listening beyond the names you recognize? I had this vol. since i bought in fall of 1994, Had no idea its the only vol in the series thats out of print due to rights issues. I seen this thing going for $149.00 Wow. ok as far as the music on the disc, let me just say there are odd choices for this vol. Ok i grew up in philly listening to 98 WCAU -FM in 1982 when i was like 10 yrs old, and the only song i reconize on this vol from those days is pass the ducthie , which seems like a misplaced from this new wave song selction but it works however, but i never heard of alot of these songs. Some i got to know around 1993 listening a station called DRE that played classic new wave durning the 80's lunch hour. I've had this cd for about a year or so, and i still listen to it at least once a week. I pretty much like every song on this cd, except that i don't care for the Frenzal Rhomb song, but mayve i'll just have to listen to it some more. This cd has some really good unreleased tracks, but my favorites are the ones by Anti-Flag, Good Riddance, Sick of it All, Rise Against, and Tilt. The Lagwagon songs on here is also excellent.
