Release Date September 09, 2003
A sleeper that demonstrates what happens when you take a bunch of out-of-the-mainstream bands and give them a good cause. In this case the cause is to support the suicide helpline, and the bands provide some of their best. Thrice's "Silhouette" sounds almost as good as Killswitch Engage's "End of Heartache" (although without Howard Jones' vox potenta), Shadows Fall unleashes a live version of its simultaneously psychotic and pensive "Thoughts Without Words." Contributions by Poison the Well, Silverstein, and Further Seems Forever add to the mayhem. Consider it aggressor ownership of the auditory senses.

Is it strange to have an assortment of thrash, speed, and core performing for suicide prevention charity? It should be noted ... Read More:

Look over the list of artists on the CD, the ones you recognize - go out and buy all their CD's. While STIFF was great in the late 1970's as the conveyor of UK/Euro indie music - most of the best artists moved on - what's left is an interesting time capsule of that the last 70's and very early 80's. There is reason Humphrey Ocean & the Hardy Annuals or Mick Farren are forgotten. At the time, they were loud and brash and a nice antidote to the soft rock era of the 1970's but from that emerged Costello, Nick Lowe, and hundreds of artists you can name & remember ... and of course, leaving most of these guys & women behind ... so if you're a completist collector, you'll want these tracks but for listening beyond the names you recognize? ... History of Portland Punk, Vol. 1

by: Various Artists

Release Date December 26, 2000
Punk rock in the 70's was a backlash against the effete swill that the corporate music industtry was spoon-feeding to the public. The punk scene in Portland was about self-expression rather than style; it was non-commercial and completely unpretentious."The History of Portland Punk vol.1" captures the essence of Portland's underground music scene in the 1970's. I have sentimental reasons for recommending this CD. In the late 70's I shared a house in Portland, Oregon with Bob Glassily and John French of the Rubbers. I hung out with many of the musicians featured on this album. Listening to this CD for the first time brought back memories of half-forgotten friends and rainy Portland nights. I could almost smell the clove cigarettes and stale ... Read More:

Release Date May 28, 1996
I don't really think of this as an X-games sampler, as much as I do just a great early 90's alt/metal collection. It's pretty lengthy at 17 tracks, and includes alt/metal classics from Primus, Ministry, Pepper's, Beastie's, Korn, Kravitz, Faith no More, and a great House of Pain remix. The remaining stuff is all mostly good too. Volume 3 isn't bad either with Pantera, 311, and Crystal Method, but it's not as sweet as this is. So if your throwing a party with all your little X buddies, and they're at least over 19, this should be the only cd you need.

Great to have a collection of coooool bands and help abused kids at the same time. I knew the girl that this was made for and I am glad that something this good has come out of her passing, because she really deserves this tribute. The tracks all go well together, and some are kind of hard to find individually, so why not help out a charity and get some great tunes by your favorite artists?
