This is a weak effort by Paradise Lost. There are two memorable songs on here, the rest aren't special. Those two songs are "Look at Me Now" and "Sell it to the World".

This box set went above and beyond my expectations.
The Polterchrist cd (Engulfed By The Swarm) is some killer death metal, and is produced by none other than Brian Griffin of Broken Hope. Polterchrist really mixes it up while remaining true to the death metal genre.
The Coucil Of The Fallen cd is produced by Erik Rutan of Morbid Angel. In my opinion they are more black metal than death, but then again there is alot of deep vocals.
Abaddon Incarnate is a gridcore band from overseas. This cd has a late 80's or early 90's death metal sound to it.
I would have paid full price for the Polterchrist cd alone. Take advantage of this deal, only 500 were made.

If I remember right, this is actually the first one I bought of the series of four. I found out later that this one actually came out a year after Legends of Metal Volumes 1 and 2. It's actually more or less a "Best Of" CD which takes some songs from both. The only song that is not on either of the first two volumes is Strapping Young Lad's cover of Exciter. I like this version because they crank up the intensity and speed. It also has a funny bit at the end of that track. No matter how old I get I never seem to get tired of juvenile humor. If I had bought this series of cds in chronological order I still would have bought this one just for that song alone. Even though the songs are repeats of ones I already had from volumes 1 and 2, it was ... Read More:

As with some other reviewers, I see inconsistency with this "Monsters" series of CD's. Personally, I like some of the softer songs on this disk and that's why I bought it (heat of the moment, died in your arms). I really like 'the warrior' as well, and I think most would categorize that one as a hard rock song. When you take a hard look at this series of "Monster" CD's you gotta wonder what "Monster" even refers to. Is it the sales volume? the hard rock sound? what? What makes something "monster" rock? It really seems that they just put their favorites on some CD's and labeled them "monster" because it sounds cool! The problem is that there is no real theme here, particularly with volume 2.

One thing I've rarely seen in the liner notes of a CD release is a list of EVERY disc a record company has EVER put out. This one has just that.A print out of every single album that Metal Blade has ever unleashed on an unexpected society from 1982-1997.Both discs, combined have twenty bands with one song a piece, except Armored Saint and Fates Warning, having two songs each.Tracks I liked the most were Hallow's Eve's "Speed Freak",Witchkiller's "Day Of The Saxons",Gwar's "Slaughterama" and the somewhat of a metal anthem Lizzy Borden's "American Metal".A great way to relive some fine moments in '80's metal.

You know, with a cover like this you think the music would be good. Unfortunately, the cd is lacking somewhat in good music. Specifically metal. There are only five, that's right, count 'em, only five metal songs on here. You get an excellent song from the Agony Scene, another from Norma Jean (great band), a song from one of the greatest nu-metal bands, Demon Hunter, a powerful and strong song from the mighty Living Sacrifice (r.i.p.), and an all right song from Soul Embraced. So, where is all the metal? Where's Extol? Well folks, Solid State has sold you out to the almighty popular emocore. Now there is only three emocore songs on this disc. Believe it or not, I actualy like the Underoath and Beloved(us) songs, I didn't realy enjoy the track from Dead Poetics, ... Read More:

The first volume in this two volume set is worth it, I have to say. I'm a sucker for underground metal, especially the stuff rom the late seventies, early eighties. I love the sh**ty sound quality, the thrash, the rawness of it all.
I just think that its a weird concept for the mix, that being that its original versions of songs covered by METALLICA. So is this considered a METALLICA album? Are they getting money for this? I really hope not. It's not that I don't like METALLICA, I just think that they are bogus money pigs. I hope that the real bands all get royalties for their songs cuz a few of these guys never really made it at all.
Anyway, I can recommend this CD, but not number two... that one ain't worth it.

`We Hate God Too' - The Melvins. Great quote from the gods of sludge metal in the sleeve, shame they couldn't have whipped out a quick cover of `Take as Needed for Pain' or `Lack of Almost Everything'. And that is the problem with this record, not enough familiar names. Not enough to make you feel curious.
Tribute records are in most cases strange, and in my view, unenchanting affairs. As with all good covers the bands who succeed on here are the ones who change the songs the most - Brutal Truth, Kylsea, Bloody Panda, Left in Ruin and The Unholy 3, aka, Hank Williams 3rd. Other than that what you have are a lot of obscure metal bands that sound vaguely similar but aren't as good as EHG (Raging Speedhorn) doing covers of songs that rely heavily on the spirit ... I am a Metallica fan and was first curious of this kind of tribute. I have other tribute albums from different artists. There are a few good ones and a couple of misses for me on this cd but it's good enough for me to still listen & enjoy it.
But if you are too wary, try to find it at used cd stores so you won't feel so bad if you end up not liking it.
