Here we have a Black Metal fanboy's wet dream, a montage of rare 7"EPs from the genre's elite monarchs Ancient, Arcturus, Dimmu Borgir, Emperor, and Immortal. I must confess, while not being an expert on the Black Metal scene (I haven't even read Lords Of Chaos, "gasp!"), this disc truly captures the original heart and vision of these bands before bigger budgets, labels and scene exploitation diluted their aspirations of purity in darkness. Just looking at the inlay card, which openly displays the incestuous insipid state of the scene, one easily realizes why there is such turmoil and competition within Black Metal circles; it's basic sibling rivalry. The band doing the stripped down lamentful accoustic version of "Speed of Pain" is Ophelia Rising (female vocals) and Abominable (male vocals) if you haven't checked them out you're missing a whole lot, they're a great and often overlooked band. I happen to think that this is the greatest re-working of a Manson song since Apoptygma Bizerk covered "Coma White." (Yeah it was ravey and seriously out-of-character for the song but that's the whole point of tribute/remix albums) The fem vocals on S.o.P. sound very close to Inkyubus Sukkubus (another group worth checking out) I didn't really like the other songs on this album so much as I did Ophelia's.

I listen to the song and think of loved one's and friends who've hurt me.

I usually don't care for guitar oriented/various artist CD's,but this one was different.I find myself giving it a spin more often than usual.The tunes that I liked best were Victor(Alex Lifeson of Rush)'s "Strip And Go Naked",the smoking Ace Frehley's "Cherokee Boogie",Robert Fripp's "Sunset Collage" and J.Yuenger(White Zombie)'s "Blues For 2-XL".'Guitars That Rule...' assembles some truly outstanding tracks,that I'm not even sure if a consumer can find on any other release.Exclusive music always gives you another reason to get a copy of a title as such.

In comparison with other Identity albums I've heard (all but the first one), This one's pretty good. It's very consistent with great tracks from Stuck Mojo, My Own Victim, and Chum among others. The big weakness with this one is that it has the least musical diversity of the Identity compilations. It's all fast and loud with the exception of the Gathering, who stick out like a sore thumb (and anyway, they suck). So while there are some good hardcore and fast tracks, you won't find any of the great black or doom metal that the series is known for. While ID5 is still the best, ID3D is still a great value

Over all this is a good sample cd. The only complaint I have is that a couple of the bands on this sound like 80s or earlier metal. They sound like a rehash of Iron Maiden. And what the hell is a band like Mental Home doing on this? The others just sound unoriginal. Stuck Mojo is just another rap metal band, and Skin Lab builds only to result in nothing special. The real standouts are Sentenced, Shadows Fall, Dark Tranquillity. The Samael and Tiamat tracks are great, but they have done better in the past. The one that really blew me away was Soilwork, it was awesome, and reminded me of Rotting Christ. Speaking of Rotting Christ, how come no RC on ID5 or ID6, they are one of the best bands on the label. Some Opeth would have been nice on this ... Read More:
