I've been listening to this box set all week, and it is a pretty comprehensive collection of classic metal. The focus of the box set is really from the 70's & 80's, though there are some songs from the 60's and 90's tacked on as well. If you don't see a particular band represented, the liner notes explain that some bands did not want to contribute to the box. The booklet included in the set is pretty cool, including a History of Heavy Metal by journalist Mick Wall. You also get a track by track summary which is pretty cool, as well as some interviews with Lita Ford and Ronnie James Dio. Here is the breakdown of what is on each of the four disks:

i avoided buying this cd due to the reviews. i regret buying PANTHER, the other tribute cd. i thought id chance it and buy this one due to the fact that HOSTILE INTENT and GODFLESH were on it. this is definitely the better one of the two tributes. PANTHER was really nothing more than a bunch of garage bands trying to give an interpretation of PANTERA. if you like HEAVY, buy this tribute and stay away from PANTHER...

The label has been careful to pick some of the best to sign and distribute here in the US. These are all exclusive remixes too. Testify and Sielwolf are the loudest with their severe metal potency - Testify uses thick guitar and I think Sielwolf does too underneath all the noise and bumpin' bass beat. Plastic Noise Experience provides a more subdued encounter, slower beat dark analog music - the days of the Klinik. Oh yeah, this one's an overlooked gem alright. As with most various-artist compilations, there are low points.(Medieval's "Medieval" comes to mind.) However, if you'll look at the liner notes, you'll see that, aside from Lizzy Borden, the disc's strongest cuts come from Midwestern (Ilinois to be exact) bands. CASE IN POINT: Trouble's mind-numbingly brilliant "The Last Judgement." However, the true glory here lies in War Cry's magnificent "Forbidden Evil." I may be in the minority here, but this is one the heaviest things ever scorched to vinyl. 80's Glam Rock

This is one of those few gems where you can listen to the entire thing from start to finish without having to skip dull filler songs. Every song is equal in its catchiness and fun. These are good glam rock songs that seem to be slowly losing popularity. Don't forget your past, people! I was just a kid, but I remember how pick-me-up and danceable these tunes were. They are just as good as I remembered, and even more fun now that I can actually appreciate what they are singing about. It's a great car CD (especially for road trips), excellent work out CD (great for cardio), but it's also good for decent background party music. Hailing from a time when Metal was at it's most popular Motorhead bucked the trend and did things their own way.Check out Motorhead's classic performance of Ace of Spades on the BBC show Young Ones.
