An excellent compilation of folk tunes and violin concerto adagios, played masterfully by some of the world's most revered musicians. Features modern pieces (Korngold, Barber), which are a personal favorite of mine.

As an 18 year old univeristy student i would have to rate "The Only Classical Cd You'll Ever Need" as excellent. I dont know much about classical music but i was able to recognize almost every song and able to appreciate the music. Classical music is excellent to study to when i am up late for an exam and amazing to calm down to will i am simply resting. For anyone who has never been interested in classical music i would recomend this CD as a great start to an appreciation for an amazing genre of music.

Authentic American Civil War era music and sounds of the conflict with excellent narration using the words of the participants. The finest example of music of that period played with the excellence of the Eastman Wind Ensemble. You will treasure the music and listen often.

This CD is a really interesting bridge across time. Since the recordings weren't made for wide public release, there's a sense of mischief and getting away with something that is rare in artifacts from this time period. I'm grateful that technology has made such interesting bits of history available to anyone.

Medieval music is a bit esoteric, so even though I find this to be a great album, many people just won't like it. This however is quickly becoming the favorite of my growing medieval collection.
The Mari Stanko track with it's changing tempos and vocal ululations is unusually haunting, even by medieval standards. It is the haunting quality of the genre which I'm finding simultaneously stimulating and soothing. Music from the period is inherently mysterious, not only because of its typically spiritual themes and lyrics (after all, how much medieval Latin can I really pick-out), but also because we're really not sure what it originally sounded like. This gives a certain amount of license to the artists to interpret, as well as to perform. ... Read More:

Release Date April 29, 2008
I believe this Deutsche Harmonia Mundi 50th set is BETTER than the Harmonia Mundi France edition.
Why you ask? First of all, I think it is safe to say that over the years, Harmonia Mundi has always been far more valuable as a label for its recordings of music pre-1650. This Deutsche set reflects that. The HM France set is more of a chronological catalogue of all "classical" music.
Secondly (and completely subjectively), I prefer Baroque and Early Music, which this set is chock full of. Honestly, I haven't even really listen to much of the HM France edition which is weighed down by (in my opinion) too many unnecessary and boring recordings by the likes of Janacek, De Falla, Schumann, Chausson, Copland, et al.
Release Date April 23, 1996
Many of these prior reviewers complain that the abundance of operas and vocals degrate this compilation. They don't know what they're talking about. These genres are what made Classical music popular in it's age. In that era the forum for showcasing "classical music" was operas! Hence why most of these works are lost in the shuffle. Most of us know Mozart and Beethoven's compositions by ear but there are so many other great composers that existed and these CD's will show you but a PIECE. But, fair warning, these CD's show only a small fraction of the whole movement (song). If you truly dig the genre you're in for a treat, investigate!
Release Date January 24, 1995
A wonderful album. I have several copies of Handel's Messiah, but the performance of the Hallelujah Chorus by Robert Shaw's singers is exceptional, outstanding. I was inspired to have my young son listen to this album: Verdi's "Dies Irae", Orff's "O Fortuna", and Handel's "Hallelujah Chorus".
Notice that there are 3 versions of "Dies Irae" on this album. It's nice to hear others. I am not normally a fan of Requiems. I will say that I do like Bach's Mass in B Minor and the Kyrie Eleison excerpted here is beautiful.
