Unfortunately, I can't be quite as effusive in my praise as the other reviewers here. Not that I think this is a bad disc--nor do I disrespect their impressions, I just hear it a little differently, I suppose--just that Kerkezos' playing is not without a few weaknesses and there are better performances out there of most of these works. Having said that, it is very pleasant to hear a major orchestra such as the Philharmonia providing wonderful, if occasionally dispassionate, accompaniment.

With the exception of the final work, all of the pieces featured are warhorses of the saxophone repertory. If you bought a random selection of a dozen or so classical saxophone discs, you'd probably end up with any or all of them duplicated several ... Read More:

Deutsche Harmonia Mundi: 50 Years (1958-2008)

I believe this Deutsche Harmonia Mundi 50th set is BETTER than the Harmonia Mundi France edition.

Why you ask? First of all, I think it is safe to say that over the years, Harmonia Mundi has always been far more valuable as a label for its recordings of music pre-1650. This Deutsche set reflects that. The HM France set is more of a chronological catalogue of all "classical" music.


Secondly (and completely subjectively), I prefer Baroque and Early Music, which this set is chock full of. Honestly, I haven't even really listen to much of the HM France edition which is weighed down by (in my opinion) too many unnecessary and boring recordings by the likes of Janacek, De Falla, Schumann, Chausson, Copland, et al.

Ireland, the Island of Saints and Scholars, has been a beacon of the Christian faith for many centuries. As a predominantly Catholic country, it fully embraced the trappings of the universal Church and made them their own. Devotions to the saints and to the Virgin Mary as well as to the Sacred Heart of Jesus resulted in the composition of many hymns dedicated to these personages. Moreover, because of such worship practises as Novenas, 40 hours devotions and Benediction, some of the greatest church music was written at the height of the Romantic Period.
This disc is an excellent representation of song material for worship that covers many of the above-mentioned ceremonies.
