The concerto for oboe is regaining popularity and use, and this resurrgence is aided by this fine collection by Oboeist/Director Nicholas Daniel and the Peterborough String Orchestra.
All the pieces of this concerto collection are well-done, flowing and lyrical with great balance between the strings the oboe solos.
Especially appealing to my ear is the Siciliana of Cimarosa's concerto as well as Bellini's Concerto.
Crystal clear recording for a great bargain price! Well worth checking out.

Fantastic compilation of Old American Songs!
This album was recorded about a decade ago, today -
Nathan Gunn is a well known and respected opera singer,
a title he truly deserves.

Same comments as I made with the other CD "Last night of the Proms". This CD isn't as good and I guess I didn't read the preview too closely as this is only 'music of the last night of the proms' and NOT the actual Royal Albert Hall last night. Disappointing in that respect.
Should have gone for the more expensive CD with the BBC etc because of the crowd participation and the Conductor's final address, the singing and
chanting of the audience.

I recommend this cd for the listener who would like to hear a large sampling of oboe repertoire at a reasonable price. That said, there are other recordings available which highlight the individual mastery of other artists performing the same repertoire, shedding different light on the works represented in this collection.
For examlple:
Le Tombeau de Couperin: James Caldwell with The Chamber Symphony of Philadelphia, conducted by Anshel Brusilow. This recording is by far the most artistic, and lyrical recording of Tombeau I have ever heard. It was rereleased on the cd "Building Castles in the Sky". (which also contains quintessential Baroque recordings of Telemann and Handel)

Ortodox liturgic music is sometimes as difficult as it can be considering the fact it belong to a very different liturgy no matter how christian it is.
This little gem can be helpful to understand not only this very important part of russian music but the soul of russian religiosity, guided by the superb performance of Novospassky Monastery Choir, that reminded me other great effort in the same way: the Choir of Santo Domingo de Silos Monastery.
Not always Naxos is the best choice, but in this case is definitely a must for those interested on religious music.
Five stars.

It was nice to hear some of these pieces from a historical point of view; however, the quality of the recording was lacking and quite poor to be honest. It is too bad that current conditions prevented "us" from having better quality. Perhaps in the future this will not be the case and, for historical purposes, we will be able to listen to music from the past with out variances in volume and "scratchiness."

I'll throw my hat into the ring with Frank & ClassicalFan, you must read their reviews. I won't rehash these excellent commentaries, however, I would add that so many compilations of baroque music are clich'e, but not here. The musical selection was masterfully done. Not only will you hear some uncommon Baroque gems, you will become engulfed in their contemplitive reflection. This music is true salve for the soul!

I Really enjoy this Cd really great old German wehrmacht music. I just thought I'd let people know that Amazons track listing for it is wrong there are actually 28 songs on the Cd and Ich hatt' einen Kameraden is not included.
