Jerry Clower is the funniest man to ever live, in my opinion, and I really regret the fact that he passed away just a couple of months before I actually had the chance to see him live back in 1998. As a proud Southerner myself, I love his thoroughly Southern humor; the man was country, and he was proud of it. He was also a deeply religious man who expressed his beliefs in a poignant yet quiet way, usually ending his albums with some words of advice on how to be a better person. I really enjoyed the first several Roy D Mercers I ever heard. Among them are the classic phone calls he made to Herb the Ford salesman, Jack the cemetery worker, International Tours of Bixby (where you can take a tour of anywhere in the world except Bixby), the Navy recruiter (who couldn't stop laughing about Raymond's "squooshed" hamster, Liberace), and many others. They were hilarious, and you could listen to them in mixed company without being embarrassed about anything.

The first songs I ever heard from Tim Wilson were "First Baptist Bar and Grill" and "Chucky Cheese Hell," and thought they were both hilarious, so I bought some of his CD's, and was turned off to find out that those were the ONLY two funny pieces he ever did. For the most part he's just an ignorant racist redneck. Most of his schtick seems to have been recorded back in the 1990's, during which time he seems to have been obsessed with the notion that Bill Clinton was a horrible, horrible, horrible president.

Growing up in rural Mississippi in the 1930s and 40s, he collected the life experiences that would make up his hilarious, and oft-times heartwarming and nostalgic tales. Listen to Jerry talk about the Ledbetters (Uncle Versi and Aunt Pet, Marcel, Newgene, Claude, Clyde, Clovis, etc.), and you enter their backwoods Mississippi world, you own world (and the problems therein) temporarily well-lost. This was the first Roy D. Mercer album I bought. I listen to it a lot, and it never fails to make me laugh. Not just a snicker, but a big ol' gut-busting laugh! I especially love the horse feed, bowling ball, and Beanie Baby skits.
