While working on the PARALLEL PERSPECTIVES Archives page, I started thinking about Maria Callas & her rather bizarre, non-singing role in the equally bizarre 1970's Pier Passolini film MEDEA--and noticed this CD of Puccini's MADAMA BUTTERFLY. I must admit that I was kind of turned-off to see that the CD was remastered from the original non-sterophonic LP (there's just so much even digital technology can do in salvaging pre-stereo operatic recordings) and I really only purchased it because I was curious hear Callas in one of her less notable roles (unbelievably there were only 3 performances).

I was pleasantly surprised to find myself really enjoying the entire production.

It's beyond words. My feelings about this extraordinary artist are impossible to quantify. I would have an easier time describing the most beautiful sunset that I have ever seen. All I can say, is that this DVD slays what is left of my rendered humble heart.

So much to choose from on this double CD. Lots of room for different nuances of expression in both barre and centre work. Lush adages and exciting grand allegro, perfectly-timed pirouette selections, subtle port de bras/reverance. This music highlights the role of artistry in daily senior class work while still having the well-defined melodies more suited to younger students. As a new-comer to this CD the "4bar intro - 4/4 - 64bars" notation format is extremely helpful.

This is probably the best "Otello" on DVD. Placido Domingo has some moments in which his voice sounds forced, particularly in "Si, pel ciel", but on the whole, the production is excellent, with great, exciting conducting by James Levine, a very good and believable Iago in James Morris, and a really good Cassio and Emilia.
The true star of the production, however, is Renee Fleming, who is simply spectacular as Desdemona. She sings like an angel, with wonderful expression and some ravishing pianissimi. Definitely the best Desdemona I've ever heard.
The staging is very lush and the costumes gorgeous, but I really can't understand why the old Met production, which was beautiful, wasn't kept on for a few more years. I'm sure there are other Met ... Read More:

If you'd like a pick -me -up, this is the show to listen to. Great music, a wonderful score, and just fun to listen to. Sutton Foster is just great in the lead. (I think her first show.) If you saw the movie, well, not so crazy, but the basics are still there. It would help a lot if you can catch a touring company or even a high school production. Then the music would make more sense. But try it, you'll like it. I'm only sorry I missed the B'way original. But I think it will be around in revival; it's such fun.

Until I heard this CD, I was unaware that Edith Piaf had ever recorded any songs in English. I was aware, however that she didn't learn much English until very late in life. Someday, I hope to have heard everything she ever recorded. She died when I was 21, but I have enjoyed hearing her sing from the time I was about 12, maybe earlier. One does not need to understand the words in her songs to appreciate the power and feeling she puts into all her work; the meaning is clear enough.
