The Essential Louis Armstrong is a wonderful two CD tribute to one of the greatest musicians who ever lived. The artwork is great and the sound quality is really rather good--even on the older tracks on the first CD.
The first CD starts with "Sugar Foot Stomp." The melody is awesome and the brass never sounded better! The drums and percussion enhance the melody even further. I love Louis on that trumpet! "Heebie Jeebies" is a popular number from that era and when these fine musicians play it, it sparkles like gold even with a bit of surface noise! Louis' trumpet work is exceptional; and the rest of the guys aren't playing too shabbily, either. Moreover, there's also "Basin Street Blues;" this number begins with some great percussion ... Superb collection with that one and only a man who will forever be known to music and voice you know when you hear it. These songs are certainly some of his best and most loved songs.
Release Date April 28, 1992
Received the cd in excellent condition and on time. I attended several
Belafonte concerts at the Greek Theater in Los Angeles' Griffith Park. Enjoyed them all. I would still like to get a CD one of his many performances at The Greek Theater.

This 3-CD set is in my collection because I didn't have any Louis Armstrong or any Ella Fitzgerald at the time I bought it, so I envisioned my purchase of this compilation as a "two birds with one stone" sort of acquisition. I didn't know what to expect because, while I knew enough about the artists, I couldn't help but think any Louis Armstrong recording was going to bring on images of a hand-cranked Victrola and scratchy, one dimensional sound. This is anything but. The recordings are, for the most part, crisp and clear. No one will ever mistake them for modern recordings, but no music fan could turn his or her nose up at the more than adequate renderings achieved here. In addition to a lot of great Louis, great Ella, and some classic versions of a number of jazz and swing era standards, ... Read More:

In all honesty, the cover of "Come Fly With Me" is enough to get you to purchase the album. Who can resist the image of Frank, standing against the backdrop of a clear blue sky, sporting his trademark tilted hat and fine pressed tux, a sly look in his eye, inviting you to take his hand and take to the sky to "get away from it all."
Of course, there's more to "Come Fly With Me" than beautiful artwork, as the music is just as if not more beautiful and equally warm and inviting. Frank's sixth(!) album of 1957, "Come Fly With Me" was Frank's first collaboration with Billy May. Whereas Gordon Jenkins (who worked with Frank for the first time earlier in the year on the woefully underrated "Where Are You?") specialized in moody, string driven ballads, and the legendary Nelson Riddle represented ... Memories is one of Barbra Streisand's better albums out there and when you hear the songs you'll be certain to agree with me! The quality of the sound is very, very good; and that artwork faithfully re-creates the artwork of the record album jacket.
"Memory" starts the CD with this stunning song from the Broadway musical entitled Cats; Barbra makes this all her own with her uncanny sense of timing. Barbra's excellent diction also enhances her performance and as Barbra plays with both the tempo and the keys a little she truly does make this ballad her own--great! "Memory" is a fine song and it makes a strong beginning for this album. Listen also for Barbra Streisand to do an excellent duet with Neil Diamond on "You Don't Bring Me Flowers;" "You Don't Bring Me Flowers" is one of Barbra's best ... Read More:
