Together with the likes of Billie Holiday and Nina Simone, Ella was one of the greatest jazz singers to have graced the world. This recording is when she was at the zenith of her career and it is this album that contains the definitive recording of the great Gershwin song from Porgy and Bess - Summertime.

Ella also sings Mack the Knife an unusual song for a woman and she explains that she had only recently learned the song. It is quickly apparent that she has not had enough time to learn the song and forgets the words therefore improvising lyrics on the spot.

IF there was ever a desert island disc, this is it. Solo's, duets they are all there. By the way I,love "Feelings and I, am thrilled that he included it.

Now you can hear what is missing from the 1968 film version of "FUNNY GIRL"-- and that's actually quite a lot! Barbra Streisand sings a super "Coronet Man." There's a bit more for supporting players Danny Meehan and Kay Medford to do (they sing a funny "Who Taught Her Everything") because, I assume Streisand had to be off stage sometimes to change costumes. Jean Stapleton of "All In The Family" fame is distinctively heard in "If A Girl Isn't Pretty."
Broadway Cast Albums were recorded live with orchestra; just like the a live Broadway show. In later years, Barbra developed such an obsession with perfection and absolute control. I grew up listening to songs from this album being sang by my uncles, accompanying themselves on the guitar. As a baby boomer I belong to the rock and roll era but, Frank Sinatra has been infused in my blood. You can say he is part of my musical psyche. People who don't understand concept albums shouldn't venture into the world of Sinatra. They might not survive the trip. To be able to appreciate his music, you just have to "take in" the mood it conveys. Then you'll understand why it is what it is. A truly great album, but then only a hardcore Sinatraphile can say that.

I had the great good fortune to see a production in Boston, about a year after the NY production represented here. While the voices were not quite as big, they all presented the material beautifully. What some of the other reviewers have said, not all these songs are things that you want to listen to over and over. Some of them are best left at the theater. Through the wonders of modern technologies it is easy to skip pasts Dogs and others that don't stand up as well. Then there is the masterpiece Infinate Joy. Classic Duets

i'm a huge fan of ol' blue eyes, and i can't say i dislike this cd .. these are only some of his classic songs, and it's very enjoyable to listen to frank sinatra sing with some modern artists .. but some of the tracks are butchered by the other half of the duet .. they try to make it their own song, when the truth is, it's FRANK SINATRA's song .. it's his own genre, and some of the artists on the cd like gloria estefan, luther vandross, and julio iglesias, who are all in different music genres than sinatra, try too hard to make it sound different .. i guess they're trying to make the song unique, but it definitely doesn't work for me .. the highlights of the whole cd are "they can't take that away from me" & "new york, new york" and others

Of the three albums Frank made in an attempt to "get with the times" by updating his sound the fit ever changing sounds of the 1960s, this 1966 effort is not only the first the best. It manages to include some unique modernized touches but for the most part stays rooted in the traditional Sinatra sound. (The problem with the other albums was that they did just the opposite.)

Frank is in excellent voice, Nelson Riddle's arrangements are excellent, and the songs are top notch. The atmosphere for the album is very casual and fun, and it shows in most of the recordings.
