The music itself is great but the condition of the CD was not what was explained. There were scratches on the cd and the case was in pretty bad shape. When a product is advertised as "mint" or "almost new" you don't expect it to be in a worn out condition.

I expected this disc to be off the hook and boy was it, me being a musician I put this disc on pull out my instument and I'm in another world. I'm amazed at this mans mind set and the times when came up with such a funky sound compare that to the artists of today and the so called freedom in the music industry, not just something, but a whole lot of something is missing.

Al Green became a bonafide superstar thanks to this all-time classic album. In a way, Al was the natural successor to Otis Redding (both singers had a great many vocal similarities) but Green's smooth and sensous style and romantic crooning enabled him to cut across different established formats much to his benefit. While not as essential as "Call Me" this CD should be in your collection if you like heartfelt and soul-stirring music.

Every word in all these reviews about Marvin's soul and artistry is 100% correct There's another reason to own this fantastic collection and that is the presence of the honorable James Jamerson on the electric bass. His beautiful lines, touch and deep tone are still unequaled to this day. Unlike so many bassists who climb to the high notes for notice, Jamerson always found the deep notes that would grab you in the heart. To be able to hear James recreate the fantastic work he did on What's Going On live in concert is priceless to any one who loves his playing.
Long live the King of the Fender bass who did some of his most remarkable work with the King of Soul, Marvin Gaye

The Payback might just be James Brown's best studio album of the 1970's, it certainly is one of the funkiest! The musicianship is among the best of all his albums from this period, and for his entire career for that matter. That is one thing you have to give the Godfather is that the man knew how to put together a band, and he knew what to arrange for them. The man was a genius, and The Payback is a testament to that.

From the ultra funky title track, 'The Payback' through the almost tender ballad of 'Forever Suffering' this is the most accessible album in James cannon. The Wah-wah heavy 'Shoot Your Shot' is among Brown's best of his career, and the saxophone on 'Time Is Running Out Fast' is just beautiful. Even ... Read More:
