There is such a variety of musical styles on "That Special Time of Year" by Gladys Knight & the Pips that it jump starts the ol' Holiday spirit with one listen - it's all here.
THE HAPPIEST TIME OF THE YEAR is a lush, dramatic Christmas ballad.
The title track and JINGLE BELLS are so upbeat they almost require a spinning mirrored ball.
Their cover of THIS CHRISTMAS has been my favorite for years...and this song has been covered by over a dozen top artists.
SANTA CLAUS IS COMING TO TOWN is a fun cut for the kids and the kid in us all.
Also covered by other top artists is WHAT ARE YOU DOING NEW YEARS EVE. Gladys Knight gives an outstanding performance and The Pips keep up with her every step of the way.

I'm not sure if this is the same performance my husband and I were fortunate enough to be in the audience for. It was for "Blues In The Schools" at County Hall in Charleston, SC. It has to have been a long time ago, because County Hall no longer exists. It was replaced many years ago by an auditorium and now a Performing Arts Center and a Coliseum. We just don't get the same kinds of performers there that we prefer. So I rely on my CDs. I can't remember the date; one of my children was in the High School band and this performance was designed for introducing youngsters to this genre' of music. I think it was great. I don't remember the profanity, so this probably isn't the one, since there were plenty of school kids in the audience. ... Read More:

I don't really understand Mowtown sometimes and this is why. While the Jackson 5 have had many hits with the label its seem as though Berry Gordy and the other label heads forget to promote songs that are actually better than the more famous singles. Case in point, the songs "Moving Violation" and "(You Were Made)Especially For Me" should have been hit songs of 1975. For some reason they always thought that other songs were better. They done a great job as a whole but sometimes they really leave you thinking. "Forever Came Today","All I Do Is Think Of You", and "Honey Love" are also great songs that were actually singles(except the latter) but did not receive the recognition that they deserve.

THERE'S A PLACE FOR US by the Supremes might not be everyone's cup of tea, particularly those who are used to hearing the Motown sound from this group, but it's fantastic nonetheless.
If nothing else, THERE'S A PLACE FOR US shows off the versatility that was the Supremes as Diana Ross, Mary Wilson, and Florence Ballard tackle American standards like "Put On A Happy Face," "You're Nobody Till Somebody Loves You," and "Strangers In The Night," putting their stamp on the songs without losing any of the original familiarity.
They also handle beloved Broadway favorites like "People" and "The Sound Of Music" with ease, sounding right at home.
Hip-O-Select has done a fantastic job (again) remastering the tracks and they sound ... Read More:

this recording captures the versatililty and sheer mastery over funk from James Brown. I can listen to this disc over and over. Just put on track 6 and hear the violins and compare that to the funk of track 12 "lickin' stick to get an idea of how great Brown was. I am glad I bought this disc.

Bland is anything but bland, but when you see this label, 20th Century Masters - The Millennium Collection, run, don't walk, to get away from it. They offer short collections of music. Why not offer longer albums like better labels? 'Cause they are cheezy.
Release Date September 13, 1994
The gem on this album is "End of the Road Medley", Knight's live tribute to the musicians of yesterday who made music with SOUL, and she thanks Boyz II Men for "getting it right"! I agree, and it's a not to be missed tribute.
That being said, I also liked "Our Love", a feel good track with great vocals. "I Don't Want to Know" was a sappy ballad produced by Babyface that received lots of radio airply.
Surprisingly, some of the tracks from big name producers like Babyface, Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis (Next Time), and BeBe Winans (I'll Fall in Love if You Hang Around), and George Duke (Somehow He Loves Me) were not that memorable.
