a compilation of blues and ballads recorded between 1960 and 1983. nobody does this type of material any better than mr bland. his wonderful, sonorous voice is on heavenly display throughout this collection of elegant urban r & b. if you have no bobby bland recordings, you couldn't go wrong to start here. a fine and rewarding compilation, indeed.

David Ruffin's first 4 albums on Motown have been out of print for a long time. If there are any Motown fans out there, I urge you to buy this cd collection right now. Why? Because they only printed about 5000 of these 24 bit stereo remasters and when they are gone, the sharks will be selling them to you for 10 times the price that they are now. There are other sets available too from Hip O Select on line. David Ruffin was one of the true kings of soul and these recordings are arguably his very best work.

James Brown-Sex Machine [Live] *****
Okay first off, this is by far the best live album the Godfather ever released. Yes, even better than Live At The Apollo(1963), in fact it is much better. That was never one of my favorite live albums, I never understood what the big hype about it was, sure the story is cool but that doesn't make the performance any better. Now this, this is a live album.
All the intensity of Brown's legendary performances is captured. The vocals are audible 100% of the time, the band sounds just plain amazing here. That is the one thing the Apollo album had though was one amazing band, they never sounded so good as they did on that album, but they sound just fine here. Songs like 'I Got That Feelin' and 'Get ... Read More:

The most special thing about this album is most of the songs are led sang by Paul Williams, who I have decided was not only the best singer in the group but my favorite member even though he died 8 or 9 years before I was born. What he does with I Want a Love I Can See, Just Let Me Know, and Farewell My Love are awesome.
The least special thing about this album is that Berry Gordy produced a considerable amount of the songs and his songs always end up having a similar sounding melody or beat to other songs that already existed. Of course, the fact he would "borrow" melodies from other songs is nothing new when you consider how he "borrowed" his artists' royalties and forced many of them to die penniless because of his greed and svengali personality. ... I have no idea why, but HELL has always been one of my favorite JB albums... at-least up there with the PAYBACK... I say "no idea why" because alongside side the heavy stuff, JB also shows his willingness to take risks, no matter how embarrassing the potential results (take his funky version of WHEN THE SAINTS GO MARCHING IN and a latin version of PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE and a few hit and miss Jazz standards.)
Interestingly enough, HELL was a two album LP and I'd say that there's one album full of the BEST OF THE BEST of Funky early/mid-70's JB... and one of... well... the risks which actually fit in pretty well... but could have been left on the cutting floor if he were a bit less ambitious. Applies her now distinctive fusion-Delta steel, jazz, deep funkiness, and the voice-to a wide range of songs, making them all her own. Many reveal the originals only with close attention. Most coherent collection of her settings that I can recall-all as quiet but insistent and vital as the sound of your blood passing in your veins. The jazz-funk-country blues captures the calm of night in a swamp, but also the vague foreboding of a primordial presence there. Lyrics of tr 1 by Sting capture the mood of the cd as a whole: "Like rain from the stars, how fragile we are." That said, I repeatedly hear her voice as another instrument in the mix before I hear any words. [53:29]

Bought it because I wanted Sexual Healing. Dated songs but pleasant to listen to and for the most part the other songs are growing on me.

This titled Isley's album is probably their most underrated recording ever. These tunes were hot and funky. "Lover's Eve" is definitely their most underrated ballad. This is an Isley's collector item. Please do go and cop it if you do not have it.

I spent a lot for what I expected to be a high quality CD and man was I disappointed. Some songs seem to play faster than normal - just a little. It has a tinny quality - not enough bass. And they cut the end off of too many songs on the tracks - like radio does. This is terrible for the price. I would recommend no one buy this. I'm tossing it and buying a cheaper version.
