The tracks are very good. They sing not only other Motwon star hits but those of other record companies. Some ballards are a bit hokey..guess they had to fill the CD.But overall very good.

This compilation gives an evolution of Marvin's music. His earlier music was more gritty and hard cutting soul like numbers and many were popish. His voice is very versatile. At some points, he sound like different artists, having not yet developed his own unique style. Eventually on the second disk his signature sound has evolved, where his voice was immediately recognizable.

I absolutely love the song "You." It is by far my favorite. For some reason, it touched and fed my spirit.

Some venues just bring out the best in a performer, and for James Brown, it's the Apollo. Here's James Brown playing all of his funk hits, with a kinetic band behind him and a whole barrel of charisma - his random spoken interludes on "Bewildered" (with a hilarious lecture on why the women in the audience should quit their diets and why JB loves hot pants) and "Make it Funky" (which has him introducing his bandmates) are just as good as the songs themselves in this case. Which is not to say that the hits are bad by any means. No way. There's a much looser take on "Sex Machine"; hyperspeed takes on "Give it Up or Turnit Loose" and "Superbad"; an aching "Try Me"; and a version of "Escape-ism" that's brimming with even more funky energy than the original take. ... Okay first off, this is by far the best live album the Godfather ever released. Yes, even better than Live At The Apollo(1963), in fact it is much better. That was never one of my favorite live albums, I never understood what the big hype about it was, sure the story is cool but that doesn't make the performance any better. Now this, this is a live album.

All the intensity of Brown's legendary performances is captured. The vocals are audible 100% of the time, the band sounds just plain amazing here. That is the one thing the Apollo album had though was one amazing band, they never sounded so good as they did on that album, but they sound just fine here. I purchased this CD for myself as either a Christmas gift or a birthday gift a couple of years ago, and it made me want to get more albums by Sam Cooke. So I purchased Keep Moving On, which was also wonderful. I was so in love with The Man Who Invented Soul that I bought myself a portrait of Sam Cooke, which is still in my room. This album almost made me lose my mind because it felt as though he was alive, and I wanted to meet him. The feeling I get whenever I listen to this album is priceless. It is an extremely romantic album and a great way to spend some time alone. When he died, the music industry really lost an outstanding musician. May his soul rest in peace.
