This is one of my all-time favorite CDs. I originally bought this as a cassette but recently purchased the CD. I have listened to this for nearly 10 years and it's such a great mix of songs and singers that I have yet to grow bored of it. From what I've read, though, if you are a big Jerome Kern fan, you may not enjoy these renditions of his songs. I would suggest listening to the demos first before buying. My favorites are "All the Things You Are", "Yesterdays", "Bill", "They Didn't Believe Me", "I'm Old Fashioned", "Why Do I Love You?"... oh, who am I kidding.. all of them are my favorites!

What a wonderful side. This CD is good from top to bottom. No clunkers here. What a talent. I can't believe she slipped by for so many years. Consider the time wasted listening to the Stones, Beatles, Zep, etc. Forgive me father and thank you for k starr.

One of the most rewarding versions of Billie's art in her later years I have heard so far. Yes, her voice is already damaged, but her impecable sense of rhythm and interpretion shines here as brightly as ever; I believe she is at her best on the faster tunes.

This is not the best Billie you'll find on the market, but it is still top class jazz, with a lot of variety, partly due to different accompanying groups - after first set with hard driving (although at times a bit pompous) trio of Drinkard,Mitchell and Leighton, Billie succesfully jams with a group starring Buddy De Franco (cl) and Red Norvo (vb) (extended versions of "Billie's blues" and "Lover come back to me").

The music here is raw and real and the crowd is having a ball. I had the opportunity to see Jimmy Smith at this same venue, Marla's (maid on The Jeffersons) Memory Lane in Watts section of L. A. When I was there it was a unique adventure. My friends were from the Midwest and working in L. A. and never even knew the club existed. I wanted to see Jimmy Smith; so, we went. Some well-dressed young adults parked our car with all the courtesy and care you would expect in Beverley Hills (It turned out they were some of Minister Farakhan's church in the neighborhood.) They were just making sure that we would want to return. The show was nearly as good as the third act of this series. It brings back memories.

True Believer

I first heard of Irma Thomas by looking through various recomendations for her style of music on the Amazon web site. It seemed like no one had anything but positive things to say about her so I picked up 'True Believer'. Now I'm making everyone I know listen to this CD. It, to me, is perfect in so many ways. Every song is enjoyable. Irma Thomas nails each one with a delivery that's never exaggerated, always pitch perfect, with an obvious respect and understanding of each song's lyrics and mood.

This CD has become an instant favorite. I love 'Smoke Filled Room' and 'Heart Full of Rain'.
