After returning this dvd to amazon because it would not play on my laptop, I received This dvd which still will not play on my laptop but later I found out that it will only play on a regular DVD player. I wanted to show it to some of my friends in their own homes who do not have a regular dvd player but cannot due to the way this dvd was recorded or produced - I am extemely dissappointed in the product. I've never had a problem such as this with any other dvd I've purchased from anyone, anywhere!

The years have not diminished the powerful voice of the Great Odetta. I am often suprised how many people haven't even heard of her! She an American Treasure! This album features her with a superb back-up band and Odetta is as great singing the Blues as she is singing Folk. I have some of Odetta's live albums and I absolutely love how she can merge several songs into a "Suite" rather than a show biz medley. This is a different Odetta for me to hear and I am extremely pleased with this album. Whether she is recorded live or in the studio and whether she is singing folk or blues, Odetta is a truly great artist. I do recommend this album highly! One feels as if they are there in person. There is an intimate feeling to this Blues album which only ... Read More:

To me all the gold is in the prewar Count Basie Orchestra and this is the glue that holds together these recordings. Purely from the standpoint of Basieism, this is a crucial and important record.
The way that the sound has been remastered and recorded in this edition of the recordings, gives us the best real view of the Basie Orchestra on any live album I have ever heard that was cut before WWII, and better sound than some postwar live shots. Part of this is because of the superb natural acoustics of Carneige Hall. Part of this is that these concerts were recorded with actual recording equipment, while all the other live prewar Basie I know of are home wire recorder recordings of radio broadcasts.

One of the interesting facts about the development of the blues is that in the early days the recorded music and the bulk of the live performances were done by women, at least they were the most popular exponents of the genre. That time, the early 1920's to the 1930's was the classic age of women blues performers. Of course, when one thinks about that period the name that comes up is the legendary Bessie Smith. Beyond that, maybe some know Ethel Waters. And beyond that-a blank.
Yet the blues singer under review, Memphis Minnie, probably had as a productive career as either of the above-mentioned names. And here is the kicker. If you were to ask today's leading women blues singers like Bonnie Raitt or Maria Muldaur about influences they will, naturally, ... Read More:

Through the years, I have read critics write about Billie losing her voice
as she got older - UTTER NONSENSE! Not on this recording. If anything, she gained feeling and emotional content due to living life.
You would be hard pressed to put together a better group of sympathetic musicians from this period to back her, and to play such GORGEOUS solos.
BEN WEBSTER, HARRY EDISON, BARNEY KESSEL, JIMMY ROWLES, RED MITCHELL, ALVIN STOLLER - Wow! These gentlemen were (are) a singers' dream to record with. Sinatra should have hired similar personnel when he formed REPRISE, but this is getting off track here.
Like K.O.B.(for instrumental jazz), THIS RECORDING belongs near the top
of anyone's Vocal collection.

I have this entire 5 cd set with book and I can't praise it highly enough. Excellent compilation of the best jazz from the turn of the century through the 60's. I know that "The Smithsonian Collection of Classic Jazz" sounds like some dry documentary put together by a bunch of white professors using slide rules and electron microscopes to determine what indeed is the best jazz, but don't let that fool you. This set is a joy to listen to.
You won't find that it contains only what was the most popular jazz, but you will find what was the best and most innovative. The set is a cheap and quick way to familiarize yourself with the greatest names and groups in jazz history. Even if you're already familiar with these names, this set is a great place to accumulate ... Read More:
