Mud gave me this to listen to as he knew I really liked Ry Cooder.
From the first track I was gob-smacked.
This was the Ry I had come to know and love on his early albums: very sparse arrangements, deep bass, Jim Keltner on drums and of course the slide master, Ry himself.

What about Mavis you ask???
Sure, I'd heard of the Staples Singers and knew a couple of their hits from the 70's ("Respect Yourself" , "I'll Take You There" ) but that was about it. I was in for a surprise.
Mavis "owns" the old gospel numbers as if they were her own personal themes. She also injects new indignation at the issues of today as she did in the 60s civil rights movements. The voice and conviction are strong and the message ... Read More:

I'll admit I had to give this CD time to grow on me. My first impressions weren't that great, and I set it aside for a month or two. But I pulled it out again and have really started enjoying it.

Brandon Heath is the latest in the pop/soft rock singer/songwriter genre. As such, he can tend to get lost in the crowd. And that was my problem originally. But there are some real gems here. There's the funky beat to "I'm Not Who I Was" and the quiet minor key of "Red Sky." And the quiet, melodious "The Light" just adds to the power of the song. While radio hit "Our God Reigns" has a full band sound, many of these songs are simply arranged. I'm not quite sure I'd call them acoustic, but it's very close.

Does this installment meet the expectations of prior blockbusters from Chris Tomlin? As of this writing, Chris' latest album sits atop of the Christian Contemporary Music chart sales on this site. So far the majority of reviews are also overwhelmingly positive. I respect the integrity of my fellow reviewers to give them the benefit of a doubt that they are being honest and not giving five stars simply because he is Chris Tomlin.

Being someone who felt that Arriving is his best album to date, that See The Morning(the follow-up album to Arriving) was actually a notch down from its predecessor, and who was not nearly as excited about his concert style as most everyone else was, I certainly was not going to give an automatic five stars. ... The sounds of The Classic Crime are like nothing I have ever heard before and the full throttle drive of their music and rock sound is absolutely something i can't get enough of.

The Silver Cord will tear your heart out and insert wisdom and a sobered up look at life.

This time, Chapman joins forces with producer Matt Bronleewe. A few songs show influences from groups: "One Republic," "U2", and "Coldplay" throughout the album. But, fear not Chapman sticks to his roots with his trademark guitars, crisp vocals and heartfelt lyrics. If anything, Matt gives Chapman a more mainstream sound that fits his vocals nicely. Overall, this is a great Chapman cd to have. "Miracle of the Moment" is my favorite track [it got me hooked and I had to have the cd for it]. The song "Children of God" hints at Chapmans' old hit: "Treasure of You" from the "Heaven in the Real World" album.What parents will like most is both them and their kids can listen to it.
