I'm not sure if this is the same performance my husband and I were fortunate enough to be in the audience for. It was for "Blues In The Schools" at County Hall in Charleston, SC. It has to have been a long time ago, because County Hall no longer exists. It was replaced many years ago by an auditorium and now a Performing Arts Center and a Coliseum. We just don't get the same kinds of performers there that we prefer. So I rely on my CDs. I can't remember the date; one of my children was in the High School band and this performance was designed for introducing youngsters to this genre' of music. I think it was great. I don't remember the profanity, so this probably isn't the one, since there were plenty of school kids in the audience. ... Read More:

I feel like Arnold Horshak when this disc comes up. For me this is the definitive Albert King. I'll Play The Blues For You, Feel Like Breaking Up Somebody's Home, Laundromat Blues, and Don't Burn Down The Bridge. Albert excels here. Makes me Feel Like Breaking Up Somebody's Home. That's because 'Girl, I just want to know you.'

STEVE CROPPER, ALBERT KING, AND POP STAPLES WERE ALL ARTISTS WHO RECORDED ON THE STAX LABEL FROM MEMPHIS IN THE 1970'S, THIS ALBUM IS A PRETTY LOOSE JAM OF ALL THREE GREAT GUITAR PLAYERS PLAYING TOGETHER. MY FAVORITE CUT IS "BIG BIRD". GREAT R&B AND SOULD GROOVES.

There are very few CD's that I would classify as "mandatory", but this is one of them. If you are new to blues, this is a perfect CD for your collection. Whether you're 8 or 80, this disc contains the most absolutely beautiful music you've ever heard. At low volume, you've got intelligent, elegant background music (that will make your dinner guests think you're more sophisticated than you are!). If you crank it up, you can experience the full texture of fluid guitar playing and all of the complexity that blues has to offer. In short, I would describe "Spotlight on Lucille" as the "Dark Side of the Moon" of blues music.
If you're a blues afficionado and don't already have this in your collection, then shame on you! Get it, enjoy it, and enjoy it again! ... Read More:

If you're one of "Shaq's, The King Of The World Blues Reviewer's" loyal fans, you'll know that I love Otis, and he is one of my six all-time favorite electric blues guitarist's. My prior reviews of his CD's, all have exemplary reviews. But this CD, fails two of Shaq's critical tests. First, the volume and clarity of this CD is terrible. I had to turn up the sound on my stereo louder than on any prior reviewed CD. Second, there are a total of 10 songs on this CD, and the total running time of the entire CD is 40 minutes. So as Shaq always says: "You can't get da blues in 3-4 minutes. Summary: If you're the type of person who likes to turn your portable CD player up to it's highest volume, and sneak up behind someone you're stalking, and not have them know you're behind ... This "Trouble In Mind" compilation from the Smithsonian is the best collection of Broonzy's later period acoustic work. I think this is a better collection than the other 'best of' compilation ("Absolutely The Best" on Varese Records). The remastering on these tracks is excellent and they are the best sounding recordings of Broonzy I have ever heard. The songs here are all of his classics. The only thing that's disappointing is that they left off the track "Never Satisfied", which would have made this the ultimate collection of Broonzy acoustic blues songs. Highly recommended!
