Trite lyrics, cloying vocals and uninspired arrangements surf for a lowest common denominator. The result is saccharin, at best. Too upfront to be ambient but too unengaged to be trance, this is Celt-influenced easy listening music.
Release Date October 16, 1991
This album and its predecessor show Ball in his prime as a harpist. I tend to prefer the previous one because I think the tunes have more variety; this album is almost entirely Irish material, and, while it's well chosen and balanced, it's a more gently rolling landscape by contrast with his other albums' peaks and valleys. Still, the performances and arrangements are superb, and the album is thoroughly listenable even if you're not a big Irish music fan.

It was really easy for me to fall in love with this CD because , for instance we share a birthyear(1993) and a name(Fiona). But besides just that, this music, for all that it's just an instrumental CD it has so much emotion in it and the songs we're so well arranged by Patrick Ball, Kevin Carr and Tim Britton that it's really easy to just get lost in. It's also some of the most relaxing music I've ever heard, but that might just be because it's always been my lullaby music...But, if you're a fan of Celtic music, or even if your not, you can't deny the beauty of the music in this CD, so I suggest that you buy it, you won't regret it!

ALL MUSIC GUIDE reviewer Thom Jurek, tells why you will love this CD. He says:
"These original songs and interpretations are rendered in forms of sonic poetry that appeal to that which is sacred inside the individual as opposed to underscoring a particular tradition....This is a winner. Forget tags like "new age" and "Celtic," and simply breathe it all in. It washes one's head -- and perhaps even heart -- clean for a time, and opens the world up for a little while".
I am the producer of both this compilation and the "SACRED TREASURES" series. In each case, my intention was to bring together the very best performances of exceptionally beautiful, slow and peaceful sacred music. All of the pieces on this compilation are filled with lush ... Read More:

... The Other Side - or more generally - Hevia - will probably also like Afro Celt Sound System - Volume 1 Sound Magic. In a blind test, 1 out of 1 participants thought he was listening to ACSS when presented with Hevia.
Four stars says about enough; a fairly chilled, laid-back, down-tempo treatment.

This is a GREAT CD set with wonderful selections of talented singers and musicians. I don't think that I will ever get tired of it.

This album, along with "Harvest Storm," "Island Angel," and "Local Ground," is one of my favorites from Altan. I bought it after already owning many of the band's later works, and find myself constantly returning to the simplicity and intimacy of this, Altan's second album. The signature sound of Altan (driving tunes and delicate songs) is here, not so much as a band as a duet between Frankie Kennedy's flute and Mairead Ni Mhaonaigh's fiddle, accompanied by light guitar or keyboard. The tunes are a mix of reels, highlands, strathspeys, and jigs. I'm especially fond of Kennedy's flute playing, and "The Cat That Ate the Candle/Over the Water to Bessie" and "The Sunset" are as beautifully rendered as anything found on later albums. Listeners who love Ni Mhaonaigh's ... Read More:
