This Irish band consisting of siblings, three beautiful sisters and their handsome brother, have set the notch up high. The 'Works' is actually a combination of all their hits throughout their career. Unfortunately, the Works could be expanded to include many of the songs that deserve to be on this compilation. The selection was a hard one to make as all the songs tell a story that you can relate to in some way. The music is fresh, with Caroline holding the beat on the drums and bodhran. Sharon with the violin singing it's own irish melody as she pulls the bow across the strings. Jim on the guitar and keyboards showcases the 'unsung Corr' at his very best. Andrea has a cathartic singing voice that stays with you through each song. The ... Read More:

In my opinion, Altan hasn't released a single good album since Island Angel until now. After the death of Frankie Kennedy, they got worse and worse, culminating in the horrible Blue Idol with irrelevant guest artists and poorly conceived tracks. However, that appears just to be a slump.
Local Ground picks up right where Island Angel left off, showing a mature band in top form. "Eirigh 's Cuir Ort Do Chuid Eadaigh" is one of my favorite songs and hearing Altan perform it is such a delight. Mairéad ní Mhaonaigh's voice is perfect for this song and it reminds me of Altan's recording of Dulaman several years earlier. The sets on this album are impeccably performed and the guests on this album are both relevant and sensitive to the power ... Read More:

I have 4 of his CD's and I would rank it 3rd out of the 4. I still like Sons of Somerland the best and Highland farwell 2nd. There are a couple tracks with a female lead vocalist (not typical in any of his previous cd's). There are about 5 or 6 tracks of the 11 on this disc that I really enojoyed! I strongly recommend Legend to any who enjoyed his other work but would start with Sons and Highland first.

Trite lyrics, cloying vocals and uninspired arrangements surf for a lowest common denominator. The result is saccharin, at best. Too upfront to be ambient but too unengaged to be trance, this is Celt-influenced easy listening music.

I (also) bought this for my Scotch/Irish heritage wife (Valentines Day - see the heart) to keep her in the happy Irish "commute music" (as she calls it) groove. Well, this IS calming, happy, smooth, beautiful, melodic and nicely done from beginning to end. We have three other Altan cd's (older ones) and this is my favorite so far, and in the top five of our substantial folk collection. Runaway Sunday feels more personal in a way - less Irish pub party, more Irish lullaby. All of the songs are great, but a few of them are knock-outs...so gorgeous! The singing sounds even more sweet than usual (aren't these Irish gals beguiling?) and the musicians are finessing the groove in an accomplished and compelling way. It appears to me that the (more out front than some of ... Read More:

I'm Irish -- the real thing, living abroad for 18 years now. And when I crack open a beer or a bottle of wine this is the CD that's gets put on the Harman Kardon first.
The Poisonjester's Mask is my favorite but I can't skip any track on the CD. The Poisonjester just gets played a couple of times more. It starts off slowly and builds up to the thumping good rhythm.
For that matter so does Clothes of Sand and it resonates the most personally -- it focuses on emigration and is unique in that it breaks from the regular vocalist.
If you like your traditional Irish with a modern kick, try this one. But it's not for the purists.

Let me start by saying I LOVE Iona. I can't think of anything bad to say about them. The music itself is so passionate and meaningful and the orchestrations are amazing. Personally I think it was a great idea to write an entire song cycle about a thousand year old illuminated manuscript of the four gospels and what they mean to the faith of the musicians. Inspiration from something so deep and personal clearly resulted in a deeply, personal composition. Iona is wonderful and this album was an excellent addition to my library.
Another excellent Iona masterpiece is the live album with the All Souls Orchestra. It has some pieces from The Book of Kells, and some from other albums, and it is really beautiful.

This disc is a wonderful selection of pieces from the original score to the film, arranged very nicely so that one piece flows into the next smoothly.
I highly recommend listening whilst working; you sort of drift along with the music, vivid images of Middle Earth popping into your head now and then. It is a very nice soundtrack all in all; atmospheric at times, symphonic at others.

Even though the production of this dvd is subpar i find myself enjoying it the more times i watch it. Andrea is amazing in it and her energy is neverending! The best thing i love about the dvd is that it features songs from "Borrowed Heaven" which I find to be their best effort to date.

I saw these musicians recently....you won't be sorry if you are looking for well-crafted traditional Shaker (and other) music.
