Women of the World: Celtic II is quite an excellent CD, filled with techno mixed and modernized music of the Celtic peoples. This CD provides great examples of the wonderful music played by the Celts. Being part Scotts and English, I was quite interested in this style of music to begin with, and I am not dissapointed at all with this CD. I, however, don't recommend this CD to people who aren't fans of this style! If you don't like Celtic music to begin with, then I doubt you'll be interested in this, and the 30 second demos do this CD no justice. Natalie MacMaster's "The Drunken Piper", while as I could see had no piping in it, had excellent fiddling and is a great way to open up the CD. Over all, this CD totally deserves a 5/5, if not more!

This is a nice cd, but I would not especially recommend it above others. I don't regret buying it, but it does not stand out above the many other cds I have of Irish music.

This is perhaps my least favorite Altan album -- the selections of ballads are a little weak, and don't play to what I see as the band's strengths. Of the instrumentals, the set of slip jigs is the best bit on the album, but it hardly compares to the worst parts of such gems as Harvest Storm, Island Angel, and Red Crow. Really, the main criticism is that there are only four instrumental tracks on the album, one a waltz and one a slow air; for those seeking stirring reels and jigs, you won't find that here.

Karan Casey's voice is the main reason for buying this album. What else is there? Well, there are sets of jigs and reels that are as jiggy and reelly as you could wish for, if you like that kind of thing. Also, Iris DeMent joins Casey on "Song of Choice" and it is great to hear these two fine and distinctive voices together, even though the song itself is unremarkable. It would be wonderful to hear more of them as a duo.
The weak points are the two songs in Gaelic -- which gain nothing by being sung in the original (unless of course you speak the language) -- and the dreadful La Bruxa, a painful squeezebox effort that might earn a busker a few centimes (or Euros) outside the Paris Metro, but does not belong here. Otherwise, the musicianship ... Read More:

I have no words to describe it, I'm a Very Big fan of Loreena McKennitt Music and this was the last CD I bought It,
It's very diferentt from the rest, I don't exactly know in what way, I can't explain it, the music makes me feel, so strange emotions so magic feelings.... I don't know

Maire has accomplished something in this cd which few people have. She's compiled a cd of Christian music in her Celtic/World music style that is both reverent and yet not stifling. It is very beautiful and relaxing. The detail of having some Celtic lyrics included gives the music an almost mystical element. I very much recommend it to everybody. It is my favorite of her cds.
