How can a presumed greatest hits (essential collection) end up with two of Harry's biggest and most famous
songs being included as LIVE versions? What has happen with bona fide song selections? The studio versions
are what everyone heard in the 1950's and remember best (by ear). Apparently, RCA's CD producers for older
artists have no idea what they are doing. I guess it'll get even worse as we get older and the producers get younger. A good "essential collection" can only be GOOD if it passes the "by ear" test. If you were not around
in the 50s listening to the originals you have no idea which track to put on the CDs. RCA has entered this stage.

This recording sounds like it was transfered from actual 78 records
instead of master discs.It is a really poor recording with one of the tunes recorded twice. Mambo en Blue is actually Mambo Birdland, which repeats later.Didn't anyone proof this before it was released ?

I've been following Tito for some 50 odd years,so these recordings have
historical significance for me. Some of the track are fair fidelity wise
and there are some tracks that are new to me.

If you're a first time buyer ,skip this and purchase Dance Mania,
Cuban Fantasy or one of his later albums like Mambo Birdland

Released in March of 2007, Watina is a beautiful tribute to Garifuna music and culture. It is also the final album of Belizean musician Andy Palacio, who died in January of 2008 at the age of 46 from respiratory failure. Palacio's death highlights the importance of his purpose in this collaborative work: to preserve and revive the Garifuna language and culture.

The Garifuna (plural, Garinagu) are descendants of Amerindians and Africans. After shipwrecked slaves mixed with Caribbean tribes in the New World, they were expelled by the British to the east coast of Central America. Very good compilation. If you are a fan of Tito Puente or a fan of Latin Music, now better known as Salsa, you can't go wrong with this two, 40 track CD set. Sony/Legacy has done a good job with their Essential series. I'm a fan of 'the old school' Latin Music, such as Tito Rodriguez, Joe Cuba, Willie Colon, etc. and not so much into the experimentation Tito Puente did with main street jazz or Latin Jazz. This compilation has some of that but not enough to turn me against it. It has a good balance of all that Tito did throughout his long and distinguished career. I just speak very few of spanish..but listen to this CD really blew me away, particularly "ahora quien" made me cry thinking my lost love ..sigh :(
Well, I love all the songs..I used to borrow the CD from public library..and now I am considering seriously to buy it.

Buena Vista Social Club Presents Omara Portuondo

Slightly downtempo in feeling when compared to other _Buena Vista Social Club_ CDs I know. This isn't a bad thing; Omara Portuondo's sumptuous voice is at its best when she's not in a hurry.

Aside from Omara's intoxicating singing, the instrumental arrangements on this album have a cleaner and more spare sound than on other albums in the BVSC series. The players' restraint and sensitivity match her voice perfectly. There's a great deal on this album that doesn't call attention to itself, but that's well worth the time to get to know. A profoundly satisfying work.

I purchased this CD for a surprise 70th birthday party for my mom. She loves Harry Belfonte and loved this CD!! I also used the "I Adore Her" song for a video montage that I had a photographer put together for me with pictures of my mom from as far back as the early 50's back in Jamaica. Even though the song is about a man adoring a woman, I love my mother dearly and thought the title was lovely. The only reason I rated it a 4 and not 5, is I am in my 30's and I liked most of the music but not all.
