Some good music to listen to now that the nights are getting cold here. Two of my favorite songs are on this CD (Mambo No.5 and I Got a Girl) and most of the rest of the mix is to my taste. A couple are not, but that's why we got programmable CD players!

I have listened to this CD probably close to 1000 times. It is one of the only albums I have ever bought that is perfect at calming the nerves enough to accomplish ridiculous tasks like doing taxes. THIS CD HAS HEALING PROPERTIES. How many records can that be said about? This is close to a perfect record. I prefer it to Marley, Peter Tosh or any other of the 80s reggae icons.

If you are a fan of roots reggae, you already know Toots and the Maytals. This release is another classic from one of Jamaica's best performers. The listener gets what one has come to expect from this master of Jamaican music. Although Toots has always played music which is unmistakenly West Indian, he has also never been afraid to incoporate other influences such as American soul, blues, and country. This album has a straight up blues rocker(Johnny Cool) and a duet with Bonnie Raitt(Premature) along with some great roots reggae and even some nyabinghi.
Throughout, Toots and his band really deliver the goods. No drum machines, no samples, no rap. This album could have been released in the 1970's, when roote reggae was at its peak. I ... Read More:

Cecil Bustamente Campbell - better known as Prince Buster - could be called the James Brown of ska and of ska's child, reggae. It was Buster's musical exuberance that almost single handedly formed the second ska revolution - the Tutone revolution in England in the late `70s.

This collection of songs captures some of Busters best work from the `60s. "Madness" (later adopted as the name of the English ska band) and "Al Capone" (later remade by The Specials) are rudeboy anthems in the same vein as the Wailer's "Simmer Down" and Desmond Dekker's "007 (Shanty Town)." last month i experienced some horror in my life that was worthy of a stephen king novel. i wanted to listen to charlie haden's sublime album "nocturne," and i couldn't find it! it was not there where it should be amongst my other charlie haden cds! fear overtook me at once and i began turning the house upside down in my frantic search for this gem. nowhere was it to be found. my heart raced and beads of sweat formed on my forehead. i felt sick. well, amazon.com came to my rescue. i jumped online and ordered me another copy pronto. and now i have this gorgeous recording back in my home. seriously, i have over 700 jazz albums, and this one is in my top 25. like the miles davis slice of heaven "kind of blue," this charlie haden album is perfect. every second. ... "Danca ma mi Criola" is a bouncy love song."Me ki sa oule" is a lilting song of longing."Bomba traigo yo" is joyfully infectious.The BEST songs are "Falso Testemunho" from Cape Verde&"Veinte anos" from Cuba.Both these songs are about unrequited love&betrayal.For popular songs,they are moving."Sonegaly" is an enchanting song from Madagascar.Tarika hasn't been as good since."E I Taurua"&"Olinda Road" are magical songs from Tahiti&Hawaii.

D'Gary&Jihe from Madagascar as well as Quito Rymer from Tortola aren't quite so good.Interesting sidenote-Rymer's "Mix up world" is one of the themes for Putumayo's World Music Hour.Oh well.

Before purchasing this album, I'd not heard Culture since I was in college. A buddy of mine used to spin a couple of their discs of which this, I now know, was one. I can do without the five bonus tracks which are basically remixes of selections from the primary track list that I'll probably never listen to again. But the core album itself is really slammin' from start to finish. Very solid, upbeat and still quite fresh sounding. The liner notes and photos in the booklet that comes with this 30-anniversary edition are enjoyable too. If you're a reggae fan, you won't be disappointed by this record.
