surprized to see no reviews on this cd, so I decided to weigh in for my first review, I'm 45 listen to everything from stranglers to vivaldi. this CD is great, I've had it since '95 and still play it reqularly, the combination of vocals, arrangements and the tom waits lyrics goes great in my low light beer drinking heart of saturday night. not for jumping around the room, slow pace, thoughtful, excellent work, raises the little hairs on my neck still to this day with "is it the crack of the pool-balls" no category captures the scope of this CD - dark smooth folk jazz. check it out.

Black Coffee is an incredibly fine CD by the incomparable Peggy Lee. Peggy's voice never sounded better; and she masterfully handles these songs with panache. The quality of the sound is rather good; and I love that artwork!
The album starts with the title track, "Black Coffee." This jazzy little tune shines brighter than gold when Peggy sings it with passion, heart and soul. I'm very impressed with the horn arrangement in the background while Peggy sings this perfectly. I predict that you will enjoy "Black Coffee" very much. Listen also for "I've Got You Under My Skin." This second number has a faster tempo that is also rather jazzy--and elegant. Peggy bats this straight out of the ballpark and she changes tempo and keys effortlessly. ... Read More:

It was a surprise to have discovered Nellie McKay's David via Last.FM when asking for similar s to Jill Tracy. I've ordered the three albums available in Amazon.com and I'm planning to get some tracks available on iTunes.
My favorite still is "Get away from me" tough. If you are readinf this ;-), I would definitely recommend that you try it. last.fm, her myspace page or one of the sites nelliemckay.{com, net, org} which have tracks available. There's also some videos available on youtube.

This, like most other CD compilations of the music of Rosemary Clooney, warrants 5 stars simply because, no matter what the tune or song, her rendition always ranks right up there with the very best. She was that good.
Having said that, however, and as a diehard collector of hit singles, I lament the lack of releases covering many artists like Rosie which fail to deliver ALL the songs that made them stars, i.e., the hit singles that got them heard on the airwaves and juke boxes in those days of the 78/45 rpm. I also question the snobbery of some who pass off many of those hits as "fluff" not worthy of the artist concerned.
Here, for example, author Didier C. Deutsch, in his two pages of liner notes, says, in reference to her widespread ... Read More:

Michael Feinstein is a Romantic's Romantic! He's able to capture gut level emotion with his words, voice and piano. His song 'My Favorite Year' is one that will bring an Old Flame right back from the dead and have it blazing before your eyes once more! He's gentle yet powerful and there is a humble quality about his presentation that makes you just want to embrace him. Very easy to listen to, yet provocative.

I love her more quirky songs and her voice is great but I was a little disappointed that a good number of the songs seemed a bit more traditional in style. However, her lyrics are very funny.

Ms. McKay has both a tremendous amount of talent and energy. Her voice is rather ordinary, but her musicianship is wonderful. Her lyric writing is sometimes brilliant and sometimes amateurish. often all within the same song.
Obligatory Villagers is to my ear probably her best CD so far with less low spots and excess than her previous CDs. But I think and know she can do better.
My view is that Ms. McKay needs someone like a modern day Norman Ganz to harness her immense talent into something that all can enjoy. Right now there is a lot of quirky stuff and brilliance mixed with material that's just plain dopey. It's music for audiophiles.
I don't think Columbia was the right place for her, but this do it yourself approach she's using ... Read More:

Because Ms Krall is accompanied by some outstanding musicians of the jazz genre I presume she is concerned to be recognized as a jazz singer and a jazz pianist. If this is so then I have to say her nasal twang, indifferent rhythmic sense, and poor understanding of the lyric makes her an indifferent jazz interpreter of the great american song book. To take "I've Got the World On A String" as an example, it may as well be sung by a computer. Embarrassing. As for her piano playing then she is an accomplished cocktail pianist but to place her in the jazz pantheon would be a considerable leap of pure faith.
On the slower tunes, she is more successful in a cutesy way as on "Squeeze Me". But I would think she must be the most overrated "jazz" artist of the last decade.

When I was a small child she was popular and we heard her on the radio and on Ed Sullivan. Now so many years later I rediscovered her music thanks to the movie "Le Vie en Rose." As an older adult, I appreciate her ageless talent. This album is a total pleasure, I recommend it highly.

This is Jane Olivor at her best. Her voice is rich and full, and she uses her voice as an instrument to interpret the songs she sings.
