This album was my first of Mr. Short's, and I eventually worked my way backwards. I was introduced to him about four or five years ago (I'm only twenty six) by someone I met while seeing Woody at The Carlyle. This album is the closest one can get to seeing Mr. Short, and what his modern shows are like. Great brass, intimate setting and wonderful songs performed by Mr. Short with his legendary phrasing and delievery, are soon to be no more after this year. For the past three years I have been around the world in the military, two or three times a year traveling back home to see him. "Mabel Mercer Sings Cole Porter," is one of the greatly-admired classics by the English-born, mid-20th century performer, as recorded at Atlantic's historic West 56th Studios, and engineered by Tom Dowd. Porter's songs are largely well-known; they come from ten of his shows; and all illustrate Mercer's great artistry with a great song: the flexibility of her voice, her ability to present the emotional truth of it; her intonation, her phrasing. Mind you, some modern listeners may find her piano accompaniment, as provided by Cy Walter and Stan Freeman to be a bit florid, but it really does not detract from her fine soprano voice.

On the liner notes to the CD, Ms. Naylor thanks the Plush Room for giving her the opportunity "..to show the world how much I love to sing." It's clear that she does, and enjoys every minute of it. Lots of Jazz standards we have all heard hundreds of times before, but she makes them well worth another listen. She is backed by an excellent band; there are several exquisite piano solos throughout the record. This is a well-recorded live CD; it puts you right in the middle of the proverbial smoky jazz club. If you are a straight-ahead Jazz fan, this is the CD for you. Mix up the martinis, sit back, and enjoy.

"The Rare Piaf" is chiefly a collection of English versions of some of her tunes. The real prize on this CD, however, is the pair of c. 1962 studio sessions. The first is some 22 minutes long. You hear the orchestra alone practicing, then Piaf attempting the song multiple times and you can also hear her lauhging with or barking at the musicians or directors. The English tracks on this disc can be obtained on other compilations, but this one is worth getting because of the bonus tracks.

This is the perfect disc to encouter Mabel Mercer for the first time. She's at her peak here: her intonation dead-on, her diction perfect and her musicianship as superb as it got. Many fine singers credit her for all they learned about singing from listening to her. These 1950s recordings show why. If you care about singing you won't be disappointed.

I'm a James Last fan anyway, but this is a CD I will play a lot during the Christmas season. I have many Christmas CDs but this will be one of my favorites.

I have listened to German Christmas songs for many years and this well-done CD brings back many good memories. The sound reproduction is very clear. There isn't a track on this CD I don't like!! Its very well done.
