"Once in a Blue Moon," and "Midnight at Mabel Mercer's," both by Mabel Mercer, of course, and originally released by Atlantic Records in 1956 and 1958, are now offered together by Collectables Jazz Classics, and they offer an unusual opportunity to get two fine albums by the woman often called "the singers' singer," together, for the price of one.
Mercer, a widely influential singer most active in the mid-twentieth century, was not as well-known as she might have been to the general public: but singers as varied as Frank Sinatra, Nat "King" Cole and Peggy Lee worshiped at her feet. She was a classic cabaret singer, with a following that was deep, if not wide, and was a beloved icon in several cities: New York, London, San Francisco, ... Read More:

Since this is near the end of Piaf's life, here is a certain added intensity to this performance. It is a great moment in popular music history to be able to hear!! Wonderful!!

Sentimental Journey, Vol. 2 is yet another excellent installment in this CD series of wonderful words and music from the era of classic pop vocals and the "oldies." The quality of the sound is great and that artwork impresses me very much.
Bing Crosby begins the CD track set with a wonderful rendition of "Far Away Places." "Far Away Places" is a charming ballad that features Bing front and center--great! "Far Away Places" also appeals to so many people because of the human desire to want to explore the world and travel to places far away from home. Peggy Lee then sings a wonderful--and somewhat amusing--melody called "Mañana (Is Soon Enough For Me)." "Mañana (Is Soon Enough For Me)" was a song Peggy co-wrote with her husband David Barbour; ... "Mabel Mercer Sings Cole Porter," is one of the greatly-admired classics by the English-born, mid-20th century performer, as recorded at Atlantic's historic West 56th Studios, and engineered by Tom Dowd. Porter's songs are largely well-known; they come from ten of his shows; and all illustrate Mercer's great artistry with a great song: the flexibility of her voice, her ability to present the emotional truth of it; her intonation, her phrasing. Mind you, some modern listeners may find her piano accompaniment, as provided by Cy Walter and Stan Freeman to be a bit florid, but it really does not detract from her fine soprano voice.
The disk opens on an "It's Delovely," that truly is, delightful, delicious and delovely. "Every Time We Say Goodbye," captures ... Read More:

The record 'Nuff Said! was recorded live the day after Dr. Martin Luther King was assassinated. Nina Simone's performance is a unique testament of that era combining an excellent performance with genuine emotions. Her voice delivers the songs with dignity, achieving a quality I haven't heard on any of her other live recording since. Nearly forty years onwards it proves the outstanding qualities of this often misunderstood lady.

Of course I am a "Marlene" fan but this is a most enjoyable collection of her songs and also the introduction by Noel Coward is so well spoken. It is interesting to note her later change in style when working with Burt Bacharach. This is a great CD.

Jacques Brel is one of the greatest singer/songwriters in recorded history. You will make a BIG mistake if you judge him soley by listening to the short recorded "previews" on Amazon. This guy may not have the greatest voice, but he has "Soul" in abundance! It is his "soul" or "spirit" that makes his songs and singing so thrilling! BUT DO NOT BUY THIS EDITION OF "INFINIMENT". This is the 2003 Imported edition. Yes, it is alittle cheaper than the 2004 domestic edition of "Infiniment"....but this edition (2003) HAS NO TRANSLATIONS. That is acceptable if you speak French, but we English speaking people NEED THE TRANSLATIONS to understand what the songs are about. Instead of this edition, buy the 2004 "Infiniment" also sold on Amazon at a different web address. ... Read More:
