This is Jane's Best CD Ever. Every song is a gem. While listening to it, I can only imagine how wonderful it must have been to be an audience member. She sings like an angel. If you are looking to hear an artist that can Really sing....... she's the girl for you !!!!!!

SERGE GAINSBOURG wanted to be a painter, but ended up like his father in music.His career spanned 30 years and his talent was on a multi level, he wrote many great songs for others( GALL,HARDY,DUTRONC,BIRKIN,BARDOT),two classic concept albums for himself(MELODIE NELSON AND L'HOMME A LA TETE DE CHOU)and his lifestyle was always the bohemian type.Resuming his career in a few records is not an easy task, but this collection is a perfect introduction, it has a little of everything except the songs he created for others.SERGE has encountered at least five transformations in his solo output, often capable of following fashions by adopting them his own way.His cult following is well deserved. He was FRENCH's music's enfant terrible. Enjoy the music!

This could have been 5 stars. I put four because, I'm no expert on french songs. But this appears to be an excellent selection. Lucienne Boyer's "Parlez-moi d'amour" which I've obviously heard before was a revelation -- I forgot how good it was -- I play it over and over. A good introduction, I think. By the way, the songs and recordings are mostly from the 30's.

This double CD is stuffed full of great songs and amazing stories. My favorite stories are of Elaine's date with Marlon Brando, what she thought some lyric are/meant, and her time in Compant. The total honesty that she brings it all together is touching and inspiring.

Very few people have the length or variety of a career that Elaine Stritch has had. I am sure that she has enough stories to do ten more shows.

If you love Broadway then you must buy this CD.

There some rare circumstances where some people who have less than perfect singing voices can deliver a song on feeling, some may call it "heart'. Jimmy Durante, Loius Armstrong and George Burns were among those I am talking about. Though I don't think that I have seen any of Ms. Dietrich's movies, this CD is quite impressive. Even though it is all in German (which I do not speak) and even though she talks her way through some parts of some songs, Dietrich sings with feeling and warmth; especially a kind of "pathos".

I thought I heard something about Dietrich leaving Germany under the shadow of the Nazis, militarism and war; that might explain her identification with American folk songs such as "Where Have All the Flowers Gone" and "Blowin' ... Read More:

I love this boxed set, but my main mission here is to fill some of you in. Yes, the collection would be better with Joni Mitchell, but if you bothered to read the liner notes, you'd know that SHE is the one who said she would never allow any of her work to be on any collection of strictly women musicians.
