Bobby Short has to be the leading Cole Porter interpreter today. It's hard not to think of Short and not picture him singing Porter. As for Cole Porter he is simplely the GREATEST composer that ever lived. In my opinion. I never heard Short sing some of the songs on this album and was wondering when he would record them. For instance "What Is This Thing Called Love" which is a or should I say WAS a very popular song. There's something extra here in this album,Short now works with a orchestra. Also he has Howard Alden playing his great guitar. I happened to hear Alden in the movie "Sweet and Lowdown". Short once again makes a great album. If your a fan of Cole Porter's music or Bobby Short...YOU HAVE TO GET THIS!

Lady Sings The Blues is a marvelous two CD set that has so much to offer! This really gives people a large amount of timeless ballads from some of the best divas of the entire twentieth century. The sound quality is excellent and the artwork is very thoughtful.
Sarah Vaughan kicks off the set with her wonderful interpretation of "Key Largo." Sarah sounds just lovely and her ability to play with tempo changes impresses me greatly. The musical arrangement is rather jazzy as well. There's also "Embraceable You" sung by Dianne Reeves; Dianne sings this with all her heart and soul. The tempo is slowed down somewhat from the tempo I'm used to but this ballad as sung here by Dianne Reeves still holds its own very well. Della Reese also sounds ... Read More:

This CD showcases the best of Serge, in my opinion.
Somehow I think that Serge loved this period best. I think that this is where his heart was - long before he turned into Gainsbarre and the late 60s - 80s.
The song "Couleur Cafe" itself is an enduring classic of French popular music. To this day one can still hear it being played on the radio in France.

Jeri Southern's era, the 40's and 50's, is not usually to my tase. I have few fond memories of the fifties. But once I discovered this album on Rhapsody, I couldn't get her voice out of my head. She has a sophisticated technique, a wonderful jazz voice and sings with absolute sincerity--the art that conceals art. The prior reviews on Amazon say it all. Get this CD!

Feinstein gets the most out of Webb's already beautiful music, giving heartfelt, emotional deliveries without being excessively sentimental. I'd rate Feinstein's versions of "All I Know" and "Skywriter" above Art Garfunkel's, and his version of "The Moon's A Harsh Mistress" over Glen Campbell's. Except for Webb himself, I'd rank Feinstein as the best singer of Webb's songs that I know of.
> I have the greatest respect for and owe a lot to the gallant little producers who are restoring old recordings to CDs. So to my list of such companies as DRG and Archeophone, I can now add a delightful little label from London, England called Sepia.
I have just listened to 5 CDs, each featuring a female vocalist from the past, and was fascinated by their contrasting styles.
"Starring Betty Rhodes" (Sepia 1069) showcases a singer whose ""I don't want to walk without you" I have used so many times in my talk about the songs of World War II. Never the great star, she was always around doing a far better than average job in a few films and countless recordings. Here she sings 26 numbers that include "Somewhere in the night," "What is this thing called love?" ... Read More:

I am not a jazz or music expert, but Billie Holiday is my favorite vocalist, period. However, most of the other collections I have of hers (and admittedly, it's pretty limited) seem unable to divorce her public persona from her music. We know about her personal struggles, and it almost seems as if other producers have arranged her songs to reflect the inevitable downward spiral we know will come.
This album, however, hits the perfect Billie Holiday pitch. For the first few songs, she's young, maybe slightly hopeful, but definitely a little haunted. For the bulk of the songs in the middle, she's romantic, but edgy with cynicism about her experiences and weaknesses. The tragedy seems to have arrived by the last three tracks, but even still, it's not so hopeless that it's painful to listen to.
