I love Tony Bennett and I love or like most of the songs but at the same time I was dissappointed. Can't quite put my finger on why but...dissappointed is still the word I would use to discribe my reaction to this CD. Sorry Tony!

Following the huge success of their grand masterpiece, LES MISERABLES, Alain Boubil & Claude-Michel Schonberg came out with MISS SAIGON. For those looking for the best version of the show on CD, this is the one you want. The show is basically a love story between an American G.I., Chris (Simon Bowman) and a young Vietnamese girl, Kim (Lea Salonga) just before the American departure from Saigon in 1975. The show attempts to address some similar issues from LES MISERABLE, such as the cruelty and injustice of unfair working conditions and timeless love, but these are basically camouflage for an ill-fated love story. For those of you unfamiliar with Josh Groban this is a great way to start. It is his first cd - self titled - What a voice. He has several other cd's as well as dvd's (awesome by the way) He changed my life - We call ourselves Grobonites a proud name to bear. Whatever you've heard about the music - if you haven't listened you truly need to. You will not be sorry about the investmant you've made. He has a charitable foundation that helps bring medicine and drinking water to villages in Africa. His foundation also works with AIDS patients. I've actually met him and was able to tell him that he helped me thru Cancer his voice kept me going thru some tough times. Please just listen once. (and it doesn't hurt that he's cute too!)

I'd never heard of Jackie Ryan before now. A friend of hers whom I recently met, knew I was a Jazz lover and suggested I check her out. "You and the Night and the Music", the CD I purchased to sample her talents, simply blew me away! Ms Ryan has it all...voice and range to be sure, but her phrasing and sense of timing is world class, as are the arrangements she and her group of musicians put together for this offering. I cannot imagine why she has not been "discovered" long before now!

If you are looking for an artist who brings back memories of Ella, Sarah, and others of that era, look no further. Add to that her own unique talents and you have the makings of very pleasant experience....listening to sounds that make you smile!

Someone may think that a double CD of Julie London songs is too much of a good thing, but really it's just about right. She is almost a genre of her own, perhaps the only female "crooner" and her cool, crisp delivery transports the listener and adds something to these songs, most of them very well known in their own right. As beautiful as talented, she was very much a "product" of her era, and enticing to us that came later.

Having seen the original Broadway and subsequent revivals in NYC and LA, I must say that "Sweeney" never ceases to thrill - scored and written brilliantly. My only complaint with this particular 2-disc set (this was a replacement to an earlier 2-disc set) is that the libretto is not included.
