I've been a fan of Kate McGarry for many years - and this new album totally pays for my enthusiasm. It's deep, it's smooth, it's easy to listen to over and over and over again - yet it holds a power that makes it so compelling. Just as the title says- "Less Is More" - the use of space and silence enliven each and every song in the album with great awareness, and never in a studied or contrived way. Here is a master coming more and more into her own. HIgh marks!

You can be sure of one thing from a Sondheim musical--It will be out of the ordinary. Sometimes because it is so entertaining, like "A Funny Thing ..." Sometimes because he is attempting to be a groudbreaker, as in "Pacific Overtures." One thing you can expect, the music will be interesting and innovative.
His groundbreaking can either fall flat, or catch the interest of the theater-going crowd. More than half of his musicals have lost money for their backers.
"A Little Night Music" falls into the interest-catching category, with a 601 performances, money making run. Musically, it provides a mixture of ensemble and fine solo materials. But, as a musical, it does not work for me. I will not fault previous reviewers, who raved, ... Read More:

"A Wonderful World,"(2002), a collection of duets by Tony Bennett and K.D. Lang, to songs inspired by the legendary New Orleans trumpeter Louis Armstrong, included "What a Wonderful World," "Exactly Like You," and "You Can Depend on Me." It was produced by the near-legendary T Bone Burnett, and includes trumpet work by Scott Hamilton. Of course, in 2002, the New York-born crooner was 76 years old; and his voice was not what it once was: but still, the embers of it, with its liquidity, smoothness, intonation and phrasing are enough to cast his light upon the world. Critic Howard Garwood wrote of him, "He has the face you'd want on your neighborhood bar owner - seamed, rumpled, and infinitely kind.... It's the face of a man who has seen life and triumphed, ... Astrud Gilberto was the Brazilian Dionysian lark per excellence and the embodiment of the sensuality, lyricism and tropical alluring of the best known Latin American music all over the world. Despite the terrible circumstances that made she left us before the used, she found in Antonio Carlos Jobim the perfect key for her to exhibit her sensitiveness, charisma and unforgettable charm.
This album picks up a very significant part of her musical legacy.

This is a sweet and lovely CD, light and uplifting, esp. the last song, La Vie En Rosa, which is sung by Jack Nicholson himself. The music is a little old style, but my grandaughter, who is 17 loves it. Also, I am able to sing along with the French songs, even though my French is very limited. Love this CD!

I suppose that everyone who is interested in Broadway musicals is familiar with "The Music Man," from seeing it on Broadway, to the movie version, to touring companies, to the unfortunate recent television adaptation, and even to local theater groups.
And, I suppose that most of them listen to the music repeatedly, as I do.
Meredith Willson has written a wonderful variety of music: the rowsing "Seventy-Six Trombones," which became the musical trademark of the show; the hilarious "Pick-a-Little;" the romantic "My White Knight;" and what about the combination of "Trombones" with "Goodnight, My Someone."
The original cast is superb. This is a role which suits Robert Preston's voice and demeanor to a tee. Barbara Cook, of course, is the best, ... Read More:

This is Sinatra at his best. The voice is pure, the phrasing is perfect, and the pathos and passion in the lyrics are delivered as only Old Blue Eyes can. If you feel the need to mourn a lost love, just play Frank Sinatra Sings for Only the Lonely, and you will experience your heartache all over again.

This is an abridged version of my review for Evita: An Opera Based On The Life Story Of Eva Peron 1919-1952 (1976 Studio Cast).
Evita is my favorite musical (although due to my age and location I have never seen it live) and I must say that this and the Concept Cast (linked above) are my two favorite recordings of Evita available. If you are going to purchase a recording, get either of these. DO NOT GET THE MOTION PICTURE SOUNDTRACK! I can barely stand to watch the movie because Madonna and Banderas are not good- the score is lowered so much due to Madonna's limited range (although I do like Madonna dong her own music) that its unlistenable.
Mandy Patinkin and Patti LuPone are very good. Mandy's sweet voice is perfect on songs like ... Read More:
