Judas Priest - Live Vengeance '82

CD-Charts > Music > British Metal
starring: Judas Priest

Release Date April 11, 2006
This is an EXCELLENT DVD through and through performance-wise and quality-wise. The 80's were arguably the 'glory days' and best years for hard rock/heavy metal, when bands had 'world class' musicianship, chops, dynamics, and melody- and didn't 'overplay' or 'oversing' like many metal bands do today. Some of the best all-time metal vocalists and musicians existed back in the 70's through 80's, with world class hard bands such as Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, UFO, The Michael Schenker Group, The Scorpions, Black Sabbath, Ozzy, Led Zeppelin, Loudness, Rainbow, Dio, Saxon, Accept, Queensryche, Zebra, Blue Oyster Cult, Rush, Yngwie Malmsteen, etc. etc. who helped define an era. Judas Priest was such an influential band that HUGELY left it's mark ... Read More:

Turbo

CD-Charts > Music > British Metal
by: Judas Priest

Release Date March 19, 2002
I can only speak from a high school kid's view in the 80's when this was released. "Turbo" and "Defenders" were popular and have a place in my adolescence, good or bad, this live album when it was originally released, was something you took the time to buy. Songs such as "Out In The Cold," "Love Bites," and "Heads Are Gonna Roll," were welcome additions to a live set mixed with their Steel and Vengeance material.

They were very careful to play the songs exactly as they sound on the albums, and to some that may give it a "flat" sound, and the semi-fake crowd noise and early digital recording adds to that. But Halford sounds great, the songs are played impressively, it has a nice flow, and made for a great party album in the 80's. ... Read More:

CD-Charts Music : The Ultimate Sin

The Ultimate Sin

CD-Charts > Music > British Metal
by: Ozzy Osbourne

Release Date November 27, 1995
Since Ozzy Osbourne's "Bark at the Moon" album was released in 1983; with new guitar axeman Jake E. Lee, because Randy Rhoads was very hard to replace for Ozzy. Even the thought of using Night Ranger guitarist Brad Gillis or Dokken's George Lynch were in the mix. Since guitarist Gillis played on Ozzy's "Speak of the Devil" live album. Jake E. Lee held his own playing with the hit songs "Bark at the Moon and Rock N' Roll Rebel".
In 1986 this album "The Ultimate Sin" was released and Mtv rock videos were really popular. Ozzy and Jake got to be in a few classic videos; with songs "Shot in the Dark and Lightning Strikes" and with clips from the VHS live video "The Ultimate Ozzy" was also released. I think this album "The Ultimate Sin" was Jake E. ... Read More:

Early Days: The Best of Led Zeppelin, Vol. 1

CD-Charts > Music > British Metal
by: Led Zeppelin

Release Date November 23, 1999
Led Zeppelin is one of those bands that makes incredibly solid albums. Sometimes, however, you just want to hear the hits. "Early Days" delivers, packing "Immigrant Song," "Stairway to Heaven" and most of the other Led Zep heavyweights onto a single CD. If you're looking for depth or are a Zeppelin fanatic, skip this and pick up their albums, but if you're just a passing fan who happens to like a few of their songs, this is a good option.

Thunder and Lightning

CD-Charts > Music > British Metal
by: Thin Lizzy

Release Date January 22, 2002
"Like thunder
and lightning,
God damn it's so exciting!"

Thin Lizzy's final studio album, and they certainly went out swinging. In what may be their hardest album, Lizzy offers up some heavy riffing, powerful song-writing, and those always identifiable Phil Lynott vocals. If you're looking for the more mellow Lizzy, the one exemplified on the self-titled Thin Lizzy or Shades of a Blue Orphanage, you won't really find that here. If you want to hear Lizzy really wail and pour a ton of energy into their music, then this is a good album to check out.

There are just so many great tracks on this album. Hard hitters like the title track and "Bad Habits" are well balanced by great, somewhat softer tunes like "The Sun Goes Down" and ... Read More:

Live from Radio City Music Hall

CD-Charts > Music > British Metal
by: Heaven & Hell

Release Date August 28, 2007
The rock band Heaven and Hell (better known as the Ronnie James Dio fronted incarnation of Black Sabbath as not to confuse some people of who Black Sabbath consisted of after the original lineup got inducted into The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2006) released the second Dio-led Sabbath lineup's double live album entitled Live at Radio City Music Hall 2007 in August of 2007 in time for their fall US Tour which had Queensryche and Alice Cooper on the bill.
If you Ozzy Osbourne and Bill Ward poseur fans thought singer Ronnie James Dio, guitarist Tony Iommi, bass player Geezer Butler and drummer Vinny Appice were absolutely nothing without Ozzy (who admittedly is a caricature of himself these days), just one listen to this double album and it will erase that thought very ... CD-Charts > Music > British Metal
by: Judas Priest

Release Date May 29, 2001
Very unlike typical Judas Priest, but excellent material on this one. I do believe it got lost in the shuffle because people could not accept such a different style of music coming from Priest. About the best way I can think to describe this one is a cross between the Sex Pistols and Rick Springfield (music, not vocals), lots of melody mixed with punkish sounding rhythm and awesome cool drum tracks that make me want to become a drummer. Rob Halford is at his absolute sassiest on this one. Amazing guitar sound and solos. I listened to it this week-end for the first time in many years, and went crazy for it all over again. Made me wanna get right up and dance.

Angel of Retribution

CD-Charts > Music > British Metal
by: Judas Priest

Release Date March 01, 2005
After releasing two mediocre albums with Tim Owens, Judas Priest has managed to prove there are no wrinkles in a band that has been around for decades. Angel of Retribution is one of those albums worth buying not just because it is Judas Priest, but because the songs are too good to be marred by the cyber-monster called piracy.

CD-Charts > Music > British Metal
by: Def Leppard

Release Date May 23, 2006
Well, I guess I'd better preface this by saying I'm a fan of Def Leppard's more hard-rocking stuff like "Pyromania" and "Retroactive", and that's the crux of my mixed feelings about this album. It consists of their covers of 70's music that inspired them, and many of these covers are rather mediocre ones of rather mediocre 70's glam and pop-rockers - not bad, just nothing great. However, there are a number of great ones in here, too - particularly "Don't Believe A Word" (orig. by Thin Lizzy), "10538 Overture" (ELO), etc.. as well as some decent ones. Overall about a third pretty good, a third decent, and a third kind of boring.
