This is just a Verve compilation of random Stan Getz bossa nova tracks, not anything the genius cool jazz saxman ever had anything to do with putting together. Don't let that stop you. As a one disc sampler of the Getz bossa nova years, it's excellent. Great sound quality. These tracks never go out of style. All are exquisite.
Release Date October 25, 1990
Toots is surely one of the most under-rated jazz musicians on the planet. He deserves a much wider audience. On this CD, he treats us to different (and universally wonderful) singers with a fabulous choice of music. Some charts are lush and warm your heart. Others are swinging hard and give Toots a chance to exhibit his substantial chops. Even if you're lukewarm about the harmonica, his music will change your mind!

If you like Nancy Wilson, Opie Bellas and Pink Martini; then Astrud is for you. My Brazillian friends introduced me to this artist. her voice is like melted butter. Highly recommended!

The sound mix of this "Live" concert is appalling -- it's kind of like "João Gilberto, Stan Getz, Astrud Gilberto & Hi-Hats!" No disrespect to Joe Hunt or to Helcio Melito (the two drummers for this concert), but the playing and/or sound mix is simply too obtrusive ("undesirably noticeable" is an apt definition here), as the voice and guitar of João Gilberto, as well as the fluid tenor saxophone of Stan Getz, are consistently overshadowed by those darned hi-hats. (...rolling eyes...) Despite this annoyance, João performs at the peak of his powers, although it appears that the performances of both Astrud and Stan Getz are greatly restrained (perhaps there was some backstage (read: real life) drama going on there?). Suffice it to say, if it is great ... Read More:

There is no doubt that Laurindo's guest vocalist on the two tracks "Winter Moon" and "Old Guitaron" is the late, great Irene Kral. If this album is your only exposure to the beauty of her voice, then you're missing one of the greatest female vocalists in 20th century jazz. To hear Irene at her best, check out the best albums released under her own name such as "The Band And I" and "Kral Space." They are both available on CD and both are terrific. Clint Eastwood had the fine taste to honor Irene by including two cuts from yet another great album called "Better Than Anything" on his sountrack to "The Bridges of Madison County." Now if only someone would have the wisdom to remaster and release a CD of the album "Steveireno!" that she recorded on United Artists ... Read More:

A samba/bossa spin on (mostly) standards, this Brazilian quintet keeps it laid-back and beautiful through a well-focused set that's completely relaxed but never sluggish. This is, to be sure, very old-school stuff--the record doesn't break any new ground or make any demands on the listener. Rather, it's strictly about liquid lyricism, and Roditi's buttery trumpet is just about perfect in this context. There are no slackers in the group, and Pascoal Meirelles' drumming is of particular note. Great recording quality too, all the players are balanced just right. Highly recommended for summer sound soaking. Add a star if you've got a Brazilian jazz addiction.

This is a simple, yet intimate album. It sounds like what you might hear had you Joao Gilberto over for drinks and got him to play his guitar for a half hour. I am not very familiar with Joao Gilberto's music (I am better acquainted with his ex-wife Astrud's). Mostly what I know of him is from the classic Getz-Gilberto album. But if this album is any indication, Joao's talent has not diminished since the 1960s. He made a wise artistic choice here and recorded these tracks with just him on guitar and singing. No drums, sythns, or strings. Most of the songs I was unfamiliar with, other than the classic Desafinado. Perhaps great musicians of the 1960s can never really recapture the sound they had perfected back then, whether it be Joao Gilberto, Bob Dylan, or Paul McCartney. ... Read More:

When ever I need a boost,be it going to work or to force me to go out,I listen to this album. There are some truly wonderful songs on this cd. When you hear "It's you" or "Dori" for instance, the sky suddenly looks blue and it's 80 degrees in the shade.Wherever you are!
