What a combination! Smooth Frankie and the romantic latin of Jobim. Meltingly romantic as well as elegant, sophisticated and seductive. Just add champagne, candlelight and a loved one.

Bossa Nova

CD-Charts > Music > Brazilian Jazz
by: John Pizzarelli

Release Date April 27, 2004
I liked John Pizzarelli and bossa nova before I found out about this album, so buying it was a natural choice for me. Brazilian music is some of the most beautiful made in the world, and Pizzarelli respects that tradition while blending it with his unique style. If you're a fan of bossa nova looking for something new, or a jazz listener in need of a mostly lighthearted summery album, pick this up.

Favorite track - Waters of March, a classic Brazilian bossa nova done with a good translation.

This compilation is everything you want to hear on jazz divas and so much more. You fall in love with the CD as soon as it is on. EVERY song - no exception is awesome. They are not the usual stuff you get on the "greatest hits" CD's, but stuff you may not have necessarily heard, but really awesome.

Nothing Will Be as It Was...Tomorrow/Everyday Everynight

CD-Charts > Music > Brazilian Jazz
by: Flora Purim

Release Date July 25, 2006
After a long wait, EVERYDAY, EVERY NIGHT, I longed to replace my scratched vinyl; finally I get this marvelous work of fine art. THIS IS JACO AT HIS BEST, NO DOUBT. The musicians line up could n't be better: Airto, Brecker Brothers, David Sanborn, Herbie Hancock, Lee rit, Harvey Mason (at is finest...)Michel Colombier, Castro Neves (sutil guitarra) y de Souza (fabulous Tbone) Just give an ear to the magic atmosphere of HOPE or Blues Ballad: I Still Miss you Francis Pastorius III. magnificent sound, good translation to CD format, good work at COLLECTABLES.
I'm still playing CD 2 over and over so wait some days for mi opinion on Disc I.

Duos II

CD-Charts > Music > Brazilian Jazz
by: Luciana Souza

Release Date May 24, 2005
This is such a beautiful work; it has the power to open and heal the soul. It is drawn from a deep tradition yet feels so fresh, a new exploration. Luciana sings straight from the heart so directly, so honestly, nothing is wasted; her interplay with the varied guitarists is so intimate, playful, and deep. Their contribution of course is equally astounding. Luciana incorporates her vocal jazz improvisation tastefully, elegantly, with no excess, and gives you just enough to satisfy. I must admit I preferred Duos II considerably to her first Duos disc, though there are equally beautiful places on that recording, but as a whole, this offering feels deeper, more whole and complete...Thank you Luciana and friends!

Black Orpheus (Orfeu Negro): The Original Sound Track From The Film

CD-Charts > Music > Brazilian Jazz
by: Antonio Carlos Jobim, Luiz Bonfa

Release Date January 05, 1990
I like Manha De Carnaval so much that I listened to Domingo, Nana Mouskouri, Carly Simon and Luis Miguel's versions borrowed from the libraries. I like the original song in track 6 by Luiz Bonfa. Track 8 guitar playing is also beautiful. Track 11 female vocal is wonderful, spontaneous and second to none. The sound quality is excellent.

Progressions: 100 Years of Jazz Guitar

CD-Charts > Music > Brazilian Jazz
from: Sony

Release Date September 27, 2005
Part of the fun of these kinds of anthologies is the grumbling over who was left out, what doesn't belong, etc. Taken as a whole however, this is a pretty compelling set of tunes.

I love disc one with some really good finds - like the hysterical Minnehaha by Sam Koki - maybe not the best playing but very fun. But, since these old tunes are so short shouldn't we have gotten more than one Django and Charlie Christian? Disc 2-3 have some nice tracks by players I've kinda ignored: Johnny Smith, Jimmy Raney, Lenny Breau for example. And Grant Green, who I had enjoyed on the old Blue Notes but had seen as a sort of Kenny Burrell lite, is surprising, fresh and swinging here. Good choices of tunes in almost all cases - Wes Montgomery, Hank Garland and others. ... Read More:

Impressions

CD-Charts > Music > Brazilian Jazz
by: Claudio Roditi

Release Date April 22, 2008
A samba/bossa spin on (mostly) standards, this Brazilian quintet keeps it laid-back and beautiful through a well-focused set that's completely relaxed but never sluggish. This is, to be sure, very old-school stuff--the record doesn't break any new ground or make any demands on the listener. Rather, it's strictly about liquid lyricism, and Roditi's buttery trumpet is just about perfect in this context. There are no slackers in the group, and Pascoal Meirelles' drumming is of particular note. Great recording quality too, all the players are balanced just right. Highly recommended for summer sound soaking. Add a star if you've got a Brazilian jazz addiction.

The Brasil Project

CD-Charts > Music > Brazilian Jazz
by: Toots Thielemans

Release Date July 28, 1992
I love both the harmonic playing of Thielmans and Brazilian jazz. So combined one would expect something interesting. This album is good but he does a much better job in II, his second Brasil Project album; This first project drags a bit in comparison and does not have the same energy. But still good listening.
