Strange you should mention Stan Getz and Astrud Gilberto in this review and leave out Joao Gilberto. It is true that Tom Jobim is a musical genius, wrote many of the songs that we identify as bossa nova, and is one of only two musicians that I know of to have an international airport named after him (the other is Louis Armstrong). But Joao is generally considered to be the inventor of the particular style that came to be called bossa nova [...].

So by all means buy and listen to anything by Tom Jobim, but be sure to buy and listen to anything by Joao Gilberto also.

For those who love music this album, along with "blue" from joni mitchell, "tapestry" from carloe king, "tracy chapman" from tracy chapman, "in the wee small hours of the morning" from frank sinatra, is a must hear album, one of the most brilliant albums of all times, and also a great opportunity to meet Elis Regina, the singer considered by the critics to be one of the ten greatest singers of all times. If you love music there is no excuse for not buying "Elis & Tom" and trust me, you will LOVE it.

You think of Samba and immediately you conjure visions of georgous beaches in Rio, tan ladies in bikinis, swaying palm trees...Yea, you get the picture. Perhaps fittingly A Day In New York evokes the feel of a rainy chilly day in Soho or any other New York Neighborhood. This is not to say you'll catch any references to Gotham. This is still samba, but there are elements in this Morelenbaum2/Sakamoto collaboration that are as diverse as the neighborhoods that make up the big apple. A Day In New York is like going to a great fushion restaurant. There are plenty of suberb ones almost anywhere in Soho, Trbecca, the East Village or even Chelsea. the sound of this cd is mostly ok, but a few tracks sound like they didn't spend much time with the transfer to digital... some distortion on louder orchestral parts on one track, a couple tracks actually start a few beats into the recording, so you miss the downbeat! imagine releasing an album like that? maybe the original source recordings are flawed too, who knows, i'd try for one of the more recent remastered versions, see if they're any better.

but the music is mostly cool, esp. the first half which is the original tracks of the Astrud Gilberto Album, a few tracks are iconic: Agua De Beber, Dindi, Once I Loved... by today's standards a little heavy with studio orchestra in some moments, but it was the flavor of that age, even the early Brazillian ... Based on the mostly ultra-positive reviews here, you would think that this is the one of the finest recordings ever issued. Well, I'm not a bandwagon guy and if I am overly excited about an album, I put it away to listen later to see if I hear it the same way again. And so it is with this as I listen again after a long cooling off period.
I like Antonio Carlos Jobim and own many of his recordings. Most, if not all of the songs on The Composer of Desafinado Plays can be found on other Jobim recordings and often better performed. This CD is more intimate in some ways than his others, but it is more of a reworked "best of" compilation than something new.

BEFORE THERE WAS JOBIM, GILBERTO, OR GETZ, THERE WAS THIS MUSIC, WHICH WOULD LATER BE COINED BOSSA NOVA MUSIC. RECORDED IN 1953, THIS RECORDING WAS AT LEAST TEN YEARS AHEAD OF ITS' TIME. GREAT ALBUM, IF YOU LIKE THIS YOU HAVE TO GET VOLUME TWO AS WELL.

Very soothing and relaxing. Best for intimate settings with someone special or small groups. This played in the background at a cocktail party I hosted and I received so many queries on who was the musician that was playing so beautifully. Eliane is wonderful!

..except for a small number weak tunes and the odd 'short blips' between full songs, this is a wonderful CD. Favorite tracks include a very hip 'Corcodova' by Everything but the Girl and a wonderful duet by George Michael and legendary girl-from-Ipanema, Astrud Gilberto. Maxwell, the David Byrne/Marisa Monte duet, Cesaria Evoria and Caetano Veloso are also outstanding. I taped the video of this album when it first came available in various PBS channels on VHS. Unfortunately the quality is poor especially on HDTVs so I wish MTV through it's original producer, subsidiary MTV Brasil would someday make a DVD available.
