Bossa Nova started in Brazil in the late `50s. The "First Generation" included Antonio Carlos (Tom) Jobim (1927-1994), Joao Gilberto and Vinicius de Moraes as their main artists. Their themes were composed focusing on "Love, Smiles & Flowers" and greatly influenced Latin America's music and even USA's jazz composers.
The music of the present CD was recorded in 1970 when Bossa Nova was already firmly mixing with Jazz and conquering a huge melodic space at USA.
The original recording of "Tide" was done at Van Gelder studios at the same time with "Stone Flower" employing the same instrumentalists; actually a subset of them for "Stone Flower".

i will focus on the brasil part in this review. as other reviewers have noted, joao was at his finest on some amoroso tracks but the production is unbearable at times.
the voices on brasil are familiar to anyone who is a fan of brazilian music: gilberto gil, caetano veloso, joao gilberto, and maria bethania are among the greatest superstars all time of brazilian music individually. and on this album they all come together to play joao gilberto's style of music. i'm not sure about bethania but gil and caetano were avid joao fans. however they had never tried to replicate his sound. tropicalia's musical influences certainly included joao but were nothing like his music. in this 1981 release, we here straight bossa nova. joao plays beautifully. ... This CD needs to be a part of your library if you like jazz and it is a must if you are a Pat Metheny fan like me. I highly recommend adding this one to your collection.

Based on the mostly ultra-positive reviews here, you would think that this is the one of the finest recordings ever issued. Well, I'm not a bandwagon guy and if I am overly excited about an album, I put it away to listen later to see if I hear it the same way again. And so it is with this as I listen again after a long cooling off period.
I like Antonio Carlos Jobim and own many of his recordings. Most, if not all of the songs on The Composer of Desafinado Plays can be found on other Jobim recordings and often better performed. This CD is more intimate in some ways than his others, but it is more of a reworked "best of" compilation than something new.
This album is great lazy day music, perfect for kicking back with a steamy cup of hot java and washing ... Read More:

..except for a small number weak tunes and the odd 'short blips' between full songs, this is a wonderful CD. Favorite tracks include a very hip 'Corcodova' by Everything but the Girl and a wonderful duet by George Michael and legendary girl-from-Ipanema, Astrud Gilberto. Maxwell, the David Byrne/Marisa Monte duet, Cesaria Evoria and Caetano Veloso are also outstanding. I taped the video of this album when it first came available in various PBS channels on VHS. Unfortunately the quality is poor especially on HDTVs so I wish MTV through it's original producer, subsidiary MTV Brasil would someday make a DVD available.

This is a really nice selection of bossa nova music, but my CD only had 20 tracks, despite being labeled as having 22. Did this happen to anybody else? Still, it's 20 tracks of really nice music, so I can't get too upset.

Like many reviewers, I only discovered Elis in the mid-90s, about a decade and a half after her passing; but from the first note I ever heard her sing (I think it was from this disc), I knew I had stumbled upon one of those artists that defy the notion of mortality. Unforgettable, timeless, irreproducible by any known form of chemistry, Elis is all this and more.
From everything I've read she was (to say the least) "difficult" but diva-esque excess is a small price to pay for such transcendent artistry. (The French, I think, call call such figures "sacred monsters.") I don't know how she manages it, but no matter the recording/performing venue I always feel that she's singing just for me. (Check out, for ex, the great U-Tube video of her performing live ... Read More:

Luiz Bonfa was one of the original creators of Bossa Nova music. This CD is one of his best. His guitar playing was superb and astounding. This music is playable for any occasion, either as background music at parties or music to sit and listen to. I highly recommend it!
