In the jargom of music business, "genius" is a term often bandied about but rarely witnessed. The one-of=akind genius that was Luiz Bonfa was captured as never before in "The Bonfa Magic", a gorgeous album recorded in 1991. Old hits revisited (Manha de Carnaval, Almost in Love, Sofisticada) and haunting new songs (Subtle Samba, Ruth's Waltz, Smooth Dreams) are performed by Bonfa with an excellent all-Brazilian rhythm section. Some tracks include subtle additional arrangements by producer Arnaldo DeSouteiro, with solo spots by Gene Bertoncini, Thiago DeMello and Marcio Montarroyos. Get it soon before it goes out-of-print.

I find it astounding that her own husband frowned on her singing "The Girl from Ipanema" on the Getz/Gilberto thing. Astrud is not a one hit wonder. I have yet to find a song from her that is even average. Thank you Joao for giving in and Astrud for giving us Bebel.
Release Date March 07, 1995

Another surprisingly good cd from Jazz Moods. This one is real mellow. I now have three of these and there is definitly a return for your investment here.
Release Date June 04, 1996
This cd could be titled "Herbie Hancock and friends", as the pianist initiated and leaded this beautiful project. Some tracks are a bit disappointed, but other are completely worth it: Chega De Saudade, whistled and sang by the great Jon Hendricks, is a real wonder....as is the last tune, Girl from Ipanema, on which the same Hendricks sings "Take the A-train".
This was also for me a good opportunity to discover the funk drummer Harvey Mason on true jazz tunes.
And last, but not least, the album cover is BEAUTIFUL :-)

This is the golden age of the samba, and it's a bit different from what I've heard before. Of course, since the recordings are rather old, they can sound a bit funky. The first song on the CD, "Deixa Disso" sung by a very young Carmen Miranda, sounds like the soundtrack of an old black and white Mickey Mouse cartoon! So it's enjoyable on many levels. This music is part entertainment, part fun and part documentary, all at the same time. I love it.

A nice, generously programmed best-of set, with songs drawn from various phases in Gilberto's career, including collaborations with Stan Getz, Astrud Gilberto, Miucha, and numerous live and studio performances. If you're a fan of Jazz and Cabaret, Billy is someone you need to get to know WELL. Of his current three available albums (check out 'Jazz Live' and 'Waters of March'), this is the least of the three and it still deserves 4 stars (actually, 4 1/2, but that vote wasn't an option). This is more straight-forward cabaret jazz, but he's medleys are so hip I've actually had my accompanist attempt to duplicate them for my own performances (imitation being the best form of flattery and all that). For true romantics 'It Amazes Me' and 'Meditation' are soulful, and for those who want to dance Fred-and-Ginger style, check out 'You Stepped/Dream Dancing' and 'Come Rain/As Long' (duet with Liza Minelli). This is something every cabaret enthusiast should have prominently displayed ... Read More:

Five Stars!! The legendary Elis Regina is a Brazilian National and World Music Treasure over 20 years after her accidental death and this CD tells you why!! There was simply no other to whom she could be compared. She's an idiom unto herself, instantly recognizable, and one who always demands our complete attention.
This CD is simply wonderful and loaded with 'Pieces D'Resistance'. From the joyful "Voce" (taken from the amazing CD "Aquarela do Brasil" with Toots Thielemans in 1969); to the definitive "Madalena", complete with strings and 'whistlers'; to Milton's "Nada Sera Como Antes", chalk up yet another Five Star winner. And don't miss her outstanding performances of Jobim staples "Triste" (from "Elis & Tom") and the sizzling version of "Aguas De Marco" ... Read More:
