This is one of those Concord combination deals where they put 2 separate discs together and sell them as a mini box set. Disc 1 was originally released as Watch What Happens and is the first studio disc when Jeff Hamilton came into the group. Disc 2 is Live at Montreux; Jeff's first recorded Live performance with the group. If you alredy have these discs, you won't be getting anything new from this set.
I truly see these LA4 discs (10 total) as the last incubation period for the formation of Ray Brown's great trios. All have very wonderful musicianship and are well worth purchasing.

and here's another one. A great jazzy listen from start to finish. There is something to be said for CDs where you don't have to reach for the fast forward button, or in some really regrettable situations, the OFF button. Highly recommended. You should also consider adding My Only Passion and Magic Eyes to your collection as well.

What we have here is a masterpiece of mood. That silky, late night mood that gives birth to all kinds of romantic thoughts--some wistful, some satisfying, some unbearably sad, lonely or even hopeful. Verve has done an incredible job of selecting a wide range of performers, songs, and time periods and succeed in making this an indispensible jazz collection. Dinah Washington's acapella notes at the beginning of the "i'll Close My Eyes" is a perfect curtain-raiser; Stephane Grapelli's short, melancholy "Souvenir de Villagen" is a perfect closing theme. Some true standouts in a collection of them: Oscar Peterson giving one of the most tender piano solos in his career on "I Loves You, Porgy," and a haunting, smokey "My Funny ... Read More:

Flora's Song

CD-Charts > Music > Brazilian Jazz
by: Flora Purim

Release Date June 28, 2005
It had been many years(30?) since I last heard any music from Flora Purim who I adored as a singer at the time.I thought I'd give this disc a try and was quite pleasantly satisfied. Her vocal stylings were and continue to be unique. Her vibe is part jazz goddess, part mother-earth goddess, plus through in some Brazilian exotica and you've got one distinctive woman. The opening track, "Las Olas," is written by the late Jaco Pastorius which allows for some good bass lines to compliment the nostalgic musings of Flora Purim. It is a fitting introduction as it begins with "So here I am again " and ends with "Until we meet again." There is a nice continuity to the disc that flows like the Amazon, sometimes calm at other times raging and soaring. On "Flora's Song" she invokes ... Read More:

Francis Albert Sinatra & Antonio Carlos Jobim

CD-Charts > Music > Brazilian Jazz
by: Frank Sinatra

Release Date January 25, 2000
Bossa Nova started in Brazil in the late `50s. The "First Generation" included Antonio Carlos Jobim, Joao Gilberto and Vinicius de Moraes as their main artists. Their themes were composed focusing on "Love, Smiles & Flowers" and greatly influenced Latin America's music and even USA's composers.

In the present CD two geniuses join and mix their efforts to give the audience an outstanding performance.
Seven of the compositions are authored by Jobim and include some of his best.
"Girl from Ipanema" make you feel being at the wonderful Ipanema Beach surrounded by the loveliest girls in the world (believe me, I've been there).
"Quiet Nights of Quiet Stars" evokes those wonderful starred nights from Rio de Janeiro, with all their sensual appeal, ... Read More:
