I think this is the CD that arrived from Argentina in a paper envelope - not cardboard as the other 5 CDs were. When opened, the lid of the container was broken at the hinge, maybe only to be expected because of the lack of toughness for international shipping. Plays okay, though.

This is a decent cd by Jobim, it starts off great, but tends to get a little avante garde on a couple of songs. Plenty of great players on this one : Deodato as an arranger and guitarist, Ron Carter on Bass, Hubert Laws on Flute, etc. Check out Wave/Tide and the song Favela.

This outstanding mixture of some of Brazil's best performers was cleverely mixed with one track blending beutifully with another. I hghly recommend this CD for all who love the Brazlian sound. For anyone who is new to Brazlian music, this CD is where to begin as you hear from Brazil's best. Some of these songs brought back memories of days gone by and I still long for the beaches of Rio. I also highly recomend this CD for a romantic night at home. I have no complaints about this CD nor recomendations that could make it better.

Jobim loves people, and gets excited about all kinds of things, I'm sure there's certain pieces by Debussy and Ravel that made Jobim red in the face because they are so beautiful.
How does an Artist manage to be influenced and still make a work of art their own?
Love and desire.
Symphonic Jobim strikes me as being very Nationalistic, a sort of spiritual road map to the heart of the World, and what better way to celebrate one's roots by drawing on the panorama of Rio and Brazil, or, Brasil.
Frank Loyd Wright once said, Architecture is frozen Music.
Jobim went on record, Music is frozen Architecture!
Thanks, Tom.
I was raised on Debussy and Ravel, but they're ... Read More:

I got "Beach Samba" and "September 17, 1969" for Christmas 2007. Of the two, I like "Beach Samba" better. Released in 1967, it perfectly captures the breeziness of that year's music. "Beach Samba" is fun, jazzy, up-tempo, and well produced. Astrud's vocals are as charming as ever, and it doesn't have pop pretentious in the way "September 17, 1969" does (a cover of "Light My Fire," really?). On "Beach Samba," she is still close to her Latin/bossa roots. Most of the songs here are in English. "Canoeiro" (which, near as I can tell, is about Brazil's canoe people) is in Portuguese. "Face That I Love" is one of her better songs, which I had first heard years ago on her wonderful "Finest Hour" CD. "Face that I Love" makes me think of couples strolling on ... Read More:

It had been many years(30?) since I last heard any music from Flora Purim who I adored as a singer at the time.I thought I'd give this disc a try and was quite pleasantly satisfied. Her vocal stylings were and continue to be unique. Her vibe is part jazz goddess, part mother-earth goddess, plus through in some Brazilian exotica and you've got one distinctive woman. The opening track, "Las Olas," is written by the late Jaco Pastorius which allows for some good bass lines to compliment the nostalgic musings of Flora Purim. It is a fitting introduction as it begins with "So here I am again " and ends with "Until we meet again." There is a nice continuity to the disc that flows like the Amazon, sometimes calm at other times raging and soaring. On "Flora's Song" ... Read More:

With all of the stuff that is on the market now, it is a pleasure to hear interesting arrangements of older tunes and great musicianship. Diane's use of Portuguese on the Brazilian tunes is super. Her backup musicians are as good as it gets and I recommend, highly, this CD to everyone that is interested in laying back, having a drink, and listening to good music.
