Beach Samba

I got "Beach Samba" and "September 17, 1969" for Christmas 2007. Of the two, I like "Beach Samba" better. Released in 1967, it perfectly captures the breeziness of that year's music. "Beach Samba" is fun, jazzy, up-tempo, and well produced. Astrud's vocals are as charming as ever, and it doesn't have pop pretentious in the way "September 17, 1969" does (a cover of "Light My Fire," really?). On "Beach Samba," she is still close to her Latin/bossa roots. Most of the songs here are in English. "Canoeiro" (which, near as I can tell, is about Brazil's canoe people) is in Portuguese. "Face That I Love" is one of her better songs, which I had first heard years ago on her wonderful "Finest Hour" CD. "Face that I Love" makes me think of couples strolling ... Read More:

This was my first Antonio Carlos Jobim album, in fact it was my first real Bossa Nova album (its not exactly an album, but my first Brazilian Jazz CD anyhow). After this one I've heard and bought some other Bossa Nova albums by the Gilberto pair and Jobim himself only to find out that most of the songs were already present in this collection.
Let me tell you one thing, this collection is a must if you like this genre. If you're a hardcore fan, you'll surely want more, but this contains all the essencials from Jobim and Joao Gilberto, and much much more.
The first disc is simply the "big hits" (if it may be called so) of Jobim and company (featuring Stan Getz on many).

This is a great Concert from beginning to end. There are three fantastic pianist and Ron Carter proves he is still the man on the Acoustic bass. It is impossible to pick a bad Jobim tune, because he never learned how to write a tune that did not sound great. Buy this Dvd, BUT before you play it, get some popcorn, food drinks or whatever it is you like to eat or drink, then sit back and enjoy the show over and over again.

While this is not one of Don Pullen's best efforts, it is filled with some very good music. I especially love "El Matador". His physical dexterity along with his artistry is incredible. Check out Don and his band on "YouTube".

Our favorite CD is "The Girl from Ipanema" by Stan Getz, and when we heard the female artist on this CD we were "wowed" by her voice. It's perfect music for a garden party or intimate dinner for two.

This is an album for all occasions. A true classic!
The female vocalists on Carta Ao Tom 74 are like a chorus of angels. Joao Gilberto's voice is soothing on Falsa Baiana and of course Sergio Mendes' Garota de Ipanema is the quintessential Bossa Nova tune.

This album is timeless. You'll enjoy it for another 30 years
